i have a 1980 ford f-350 with a 460. i got it after it was sitting for 8 months. it had modifications done to it, and it passed smog. i got it running, and i put a new carburetor on it. i put an Edelbrock 4160 carb on it, and it had a motorcraft carb on it. if i lean the carb out before i take it into get smogged, will it pass smog?
I'd try .095 primary jets and .73X.47 rods and the pink, 6Hg spring and go from there. You might have to tinker with it, but be patient. I lived in Reno with this combo and it passed, not by a lot, but it passed. If your'e at a lower altitude than Reno, 4500 ft, it might be just the right combo.

If you're in California (I don't know about other states), you'll probably need an E.O.# (executive order) to show that the replacement is an accepted exchange/swap with the original. If you don't, then you are relying on the smog tech to know and sometimes they don't. This is something I've been looking at but because I have two fuel bowl vents on my carb, primary and secondary bowls, I can't find a modern replacement.
it came with a motorcraft carburetor that smogged, but there arent any numbers on that motorcraft. can i just lean it out? it has 2 aftermarket charcoal canisters. the engine is not original, and it was modified before it was priviously smogged. it had a 400, but he swapped in a 460. it was smogged, sat for 8 months under non-op, i got it, then i put the Edelbrock on it. thats all i did.
It depends. If your state is really strict on the visual aspect of the test, you might not pass if every aspect of the emissions system that was on the old carb is not hooked up(and I am making an assumption that it isn't as the factory carb I had on my 460 had a lot of hoses going to it). It will also depend on how strict the sniffer test is in your area.
I personally have a 460 with no smog equipment that passes the sniffer-but I have found a place that conveniently overlooks the fact that the emissions equipment is gone-some places will fail you regardless of how clean the vehicle runs.
Have you tried to smog it with the Edelbrock? I'd hate to tell you to get a Motorcraft carb and not have that one pass either. If you tinker with the Edelbrock and get those jets and rods, it should cost you less than $15.
Try tuning the Edelbrock before you decide it won't pass, it might pass better than you think.
