navistar made a 4.5L powerstroke to put in the half tons but i guess ford didn't want it in there because they are currently only being used in ford medium duty LCF trucks
go back and check past threads. It was supposed to be a 4.5L V-6 Powerstroke Diesel with reported power to be 235hp and around 400lb/ft. It was NOT a cummins. Ford put it on hold however possibly perminantly. But word is that as soon as we get the low sulfur content Diesel fuel we will see alot of diesels flood through the market.
Not trying to correct, but are you sure the cummins is a V6? I thought cummins only made I6. I dont know, but I didnt think they did. It could very well be a new design. I have heard of V6 navistar, mini I6 cummins, and mini I6 detroit diesel. Personally, I would love to have a I6 detroit diesel twin-turbo. The only thing would be that it would HAVE to be a stick. I dont want an auto in a truck. If I have to, I will buy older.
Ford is still seriously considering a diesel for the 150 and Expedition. I don't know exactly when it will be out, but don't be surprised if you see one in the next few years.
We've been talking about this on the 2004-2005 F-150 forum.
I hav heard a guy say Detroit was making one for navistar and navistar was simply slapping their name on it, but that rummor got shot to pieces by a rumor on a cummins. Navistar had actually made an engine that was the 6.0 powerstroke v8 all over again except it was a v6 [which made it a 4.5] (similar to how Chevy manufactured the 5.7L 350 V8 and then developed the 4.3 v6 off of the same engine). Anyway the information on the thread said the 4.5 failed Ford's emmissions requirements or something so everyone is back to the drawing board. Ford owns Cummins so I would look for a Cummins in it, that is my opinion but since Ford is running navistar engines in the superduties I wouldn't pass that option up either. I think in the buyout of Cummins by Ford dodge somehow got in the contract that Ford wouldn't market a competitor to it's 5.9L cummins in the light duty trucks (1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton models). Ford is able to use the 5.9 in the medium duty trucks since dodge isn't in that market.
Both make good engines and I am sure the best will be in the truck eventually. I hope when it does come out that they have but enough R&D into it to get teh bugs out and I also hope that a bio-diesel from soybeans has evolved more and is more popular.
PS: The guy who farms our place now runs bio-deisel in his combines and tractors now that is made from soybeans. Last year was the first year that he ran it 100% in his all of his equipment, he went through one fuel filter last year during harvest season in his combine vs. the 4-6 of them if he was using in years past. Looks like Bio might be the way to go for all of it SOON!
They don't. They may have owned shares at one point in time, but never a controlling interest, and this has come up here before. Cummins used to have a FAQ on their website that clearly stated that Ford does NOT own them.

and, the rumor was, cummins wanted to get into the vee engine market so they were to make V6 engine for 1/2 ton fords. i'll see if i can find where i heard that.
Ok, thanks for the clarification. From what I have heard about the 6.0L PSD compared to the 7.3, I am not sure I would want a 4.5L. I still will only buy one if it comes in stick, but the chances of that are rare with the decisions ford has made on these kinda things
Has anybody heard of them possibly putting a Perkins in these trucks? I read that over at a forum website on tractor related stuff that someone said that Ford and Perkins were discussing the idea.
