Splash guards?

I opened the hood today to check my oil. Oil was good, but the entire driver side of the engine was covered in splashed up dirt from awhile ago. The valve cover, steering shaft, and firewall was all dirty. Am I missing a splash guard somewhere or is this common? The engine bay was spotless when I got the truck. How do you guys keep the engine bay clean? Thanks.

I've never had any significant amount of mud get in there, but I've never gone into really deep mud. The plastic fender covers do a pretty good job. Are yours loose or broken?

the covers seem to be in place. there is, however, plenty of space for splash-up. Is there an aftermarket splashguard set I can purchase?
