Splash guards?

Splash guards?
I opened the hood today to check my oil. Oil was good, but the entire driver side of the engine was covered in splashed up dirt from awhile ago. The valve cover, steering shaft, and firewall was all dirty. Am I missing a splash guard somewhere or is this common? The engine bay was spotless when I got the truck. How do you guys keep the engine bay clean? Thanks.
