I am about to buy a diesel F-350 from 1988 but it starts kinda hard ,I have to cranck it a lot and when it finally starts and warms up and I drive it for 10 miles
and shut it down for 5 minutes the same problem occurs
What can be the problem.
George, DONT crank on the starter too long, they are susceptible to heat damage from working too hard and long. It sounds like there is air getting into the fuel system. This allows the filter to partially drain back. Usually the caps on top of the injectors is the problem, but also the lift pump (just like a gas engine) will show signs of dampness at the weep hole or may be a bad diaphragm internally. There are many, many threads about the fuel lines. Look em over. Good luck.
I have a 93 f350 and had to change all the injector return lines and end caps to solve this kind of problem. Air will suck into small cracks in the hoses. And will not weep fuel. Look at the hoses and if they are hard and are brittle I would replace all the hoses and caps. They are real cheep. I bought about 4 ft. and end caps. Then cut it to size. And don't crank on it too long a rebuilt starter is VERY expensive to replace, even doing it yourself. PS also get new clamps for the hoses.
George are you up to speed on diesel starting.......
Turn key to run, when WTS light goes out press fuel pedal to 1/2, start engine.....max starter cranking is 20 secs with a 2-3 min cool down.
What color are the lines and caps between all the injectors....grey painted.
Fuel bleed of can happen via 15 places where it can leak air into the system. Any air entering will allow fuel to leave if that air gets to the IP or filter it will require major cranking to remove it. How does the truck run in general, performance, idle smooth.
You would be wise to do a .........
Do pressure and flow test on the fuel at the Schrader valve on the filter(FSS- fuel shutoff switch disconnected). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when cranking. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose.
If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation proceedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm.
