New Trans for Explorer A4LD (HELP!!)
Got a few questions here on a trany change out for a 93 Explorer. I picked up a A4LD for my 93 Explorer at a local wrecker for a good price and its time to install it. First off,
1) How much fluid should this tourque converter hold? Do I need to worry about the exact amount or will the pump fill it when started?
2) Does ANYONE have and helpful hints or tips to make this go smoothly.
Thank you,
Brad
second: have you check the pan of the "new" transmission to see if there is anything to be concerned about.
third: if you do go ahead and install it, get the bellhousing bolts installed on opposite sides and make sure the transmission is straight and level with the engine
fourth: get the converter in the transmission aligned with the flywheel and install the converter nuts on opposite sides just hand tight to make sure it will be tightened up good and straight, then tighten all four nuts on the converter.
fifth: if it is a 4X4 go ahead and change the fluid in the transfercase while you at it, it should take about 3-4 quarts.
sixth: when everything is installed and tight (make sure and recheck), add 6 quarts of ATF Mercon into the dipstick and start up the truck. Run it through all the gears and then add 3 quarts more and run it through the gears again, start checking the fluid level and let the vehicle warm up. It should take 10 to 11 quarts and everytime you add any fluid run it through the gears and then check the fluid level as this levels out the fluid in the transmission and fills the cavities in side. The vehicle needs to be somewhat level when checking levels.
