Ok first things first, im on a short budget. I want to install power steering on my 51 ford f1. I will be getting a 4" drop axle from mor-drop this weekend, if he still has it. Ive found 3 setups for the power steering, Toyota box, GM box, and ram asist. Id like to use the yota box but cpp only makes it for 53 on up can i modify it? The GM box from sacramento vintage looks good, but it also looks like a cross over type, and i think i might have a problem with clearence with the 4" drop axle. The ram asist well im not crazy about. Anyone got any ideas?
I looked in sacramento vintage ford catalog and found they also sell the toyota conversion kit for 53 to 56. they also have a 48 to 52 listing but no details. they just say to call.
Every thing ive heard says the toyota is a fairly easy install. I want to do the same thing to mine when i get the money. I also want to put in a new column and steering wheel at the same time.
A friend of mine has a 54 f100 with gm box. I think it is a #600 box. I was looking at it and it did look pretty big and i m not sure it would fit. Let me know how you make out.
I called bobs funhundreds also and they also have the same yota set up, but they want $700, sac wants $500 something or $200 something for the brackets, cpp wants $189 for the brackets and pitman arm for a 53 thrue 56. I'd Like to go with just the brackets and arm, but I want to know what i'd have to do to install the 53 bracketry to my 51. I can find the box on my own for alot cheeper then what they want.
The only difference in installing the 53-56 bracket for the Toy box is the frame holes will need redrilling as the earlier box used a different bolt pattern. Mid Fifty sells a complete conversion kit minus the box. They also sell a hose kit. Don't use the mount that has to be welded together, and be sure to get a new sector shaft nut for the Toy box. It's a HE** of a lot easier to split the OEM one to get the Toy's pitman arm off. A new one comes in the MF kit.
