have you givin any thought to the old auxillaries that came in the old gmc's and f600's? I have a spicer 6041 in one of my trucks that has two unders a direct and a overdrive. works slick its like being able to change your axle gearing with the flip of the extra shifter. they are quite large though... you might get one between if you are running a four speed main tranny... but the autos dont leave enough room... plus if your truck is a auto, you wont have the clutch to split gears while moving. the gearvenders is a asome unit Ive used them b4 pulling a heavy trailer behind a motorhome with a 460 and I must say you almost cant beat em. you can shift tehm under full load with the flip of a switch. good luck and let us know what you find out... ya never know when someone diggs up something new!
EDIT: your truck is a 78? that means your TC is married and you will have to do some stuff to get one in front of your TC. there is also a ranger overdrive that goes in front of your tranny... but thats seems a little wierd to me. also everything has to be moved back.
about doing that where would a good place be to start looking for one that is exactly what i want. my 77 has 4;56 and a 4sd.at 70mph it is turning about 3000-3200 rpm not good for motor or gas milage.
Check with Google or the ads in any 4x4 magazine for a Ranger overdrive unit. That unit goes in front of the transmission. That would move everything back and improve your front driveshaft length.
