Ok I'm having trouble releasing the pressure off my fuel line on a 2000 F-150 V8 4.6. The last time I changed out the filter all I had to do was pop of the gas cap. Not sure what I'm missing this time. Thanks
The gas tank isn't pressurized. The fuel line and fuel rail are. You didn't release the pressure last time, if you didn't get a spray it was because it bled off by itself. It isn't supposed to but a big percentage of pumps have check valves that leak. You should bleed off the fuel pressure. The advice here is to cut power to the pump at the inertial shutoff (wreck switch) or fuel pump relay and run the engine until it stalls. The problem with this is it will stall with some residual pressure, maybe 30psi of it. You can crack the schrader (tire type) valve on the fuel rail but without a fuel pressure test gage, it will spray fuel. Frankly in the shop, on a cold engine, with a rag around the valve to catch spray in any direction, this is pretty common.
Just because you are having trouble with the fuel line connections, doesn't necessarily mean you have pressure in the lines. They get cranky because of dirt and corrosion. Compressed air and WD-40 if dirt. PB Blaster or Kroil if corrosion. Plastic instead of metal fuel line disconnects might help. Good luck.
As Cantrma said if the engine is cold, just release the pressure at the shrader valve. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, you can connect it and then hit the button to release the pressure through the bleed hose.
Once the connections are clean, you might have to pry a little on the tool to push it into the connector for spring release. If it were not clean you would force dirt up in the connector and after a few changes the dirt would ruin the connector.
