Has anyone ever install a late model ford standard trans. like a 5 or 6 speed H.D. up to a early model 460 engine. Been looking at a 1998 heavy duty 6-speed trans. that was bolted up to a 7.3 diesel. The trans. part number is F81A-7003-DE if that helps. I was told the bell housing was the same. But wanta be sure, before I shell out that much cash. Thanks !!
The 460 engines had the same bell housing across all the year ranges, so old or new, it doesn't matter.
The ZF S6 transmission only came with diesels, which have a different bellhousing pattern than the 460's, so its not going to "bolt on" and provide you joy.
However, you can make an adaptor, if you really, really want this combination to work. 3/8" thick mild steel would do the trick.
I mated an audi transmission to a Rover V8 this way
