Hey guys im new to the site, just picked my self up 2001 ranger Edge 4x4. Realy like the truck and I am down for modifications, so if anyone nows of any good boltons that would be great.
The 3 easiest bolt ons that net good power are Chip, Intake and Cat-Back Exhaust. The best bang for your buck is the Diablo Sport Chip. Check it out on motorhaven.com, this FTE's main sponser. They are only about $200 and will 8-10% HP gains and 10-15% torque gains. Click on "Parts Shop" in the upper right corner of your screen, it'll take yo there. A good cold-air intake and exhaust system will help get your truck breathing good. Which engine do you have? An intake will mostly give you top end power, maybe 3500 RPM and higher, a cat-back exhaust like Gibson (what I have) will give slight power gains at pretty much all RPM's. With exhaust a single pipe 2.5" system is sufficient. Doing a full exhaust with headers and high flow cats will give the best overall, but headers take a lot more work and cost about as much as Chip, Intake Cat-back combined. I'd estimate 20-30 HP can be gained with a 4.0, maybe 15-20 for the 3.0.
If you have questions about specific parts, check out all the other Forums here There's a lot of good people that here always willing to offer advise.
Thanks for the info AG 4.0. I do myself have the 4.0 in my truck. I realy cant wait until i start doing something to this truck its already so much fun. Thanks for the advice. One thing thought does the Diablo sport chip require premium fuel. Thanks
If you want to get the most power out of it, you need it tuned to run on premium. However, because you get more power out of each drop of fuel, your mileage should go up and help offset the cost of premium. When I added the diablo, I gained about 2 MPG, I can get up to 24 on the4 highway, and average about 17 in town. Basically I gained about 10% in mileage for a 6-9% increase in fuel price. Also, the more expenseive gas is, the more the mileage gain benefits as the the price difference between regular and premium usually stays about the same, $.12 here, so as it goes up the percent difference is lower between regular and premium.
Reg. 1.40 Premium 1.52=8.5% difference
Reg. 1.80 Premium 1.92=6.3% difference
So don't be worried about higher fuel costs with premium, however don't expect to pay for a chip in saved fuel costs either. It would take several years to save $200 in fuel costs.
Also, if you are interested in a chip, find out what the highest octane the premium is in your area. When I got mine, 91 was the highest, and that is what a chips are stock tuned to run on, that way it works for everyone, however if you have 92 or 93 octane available and you let motorhaven know when you order it, they can tune it a bit hotter and give you the maximmum power gain.
