2002 psd 28000 miles verry hard start when below 30deg. cranking for a while and cycling glow plugs at least 4 times. took it to ford and had it dio. tested they did not come up with any codes. told me to just plug it in. is it possible for the gpr to be bad and not send a code to the computer?
why would you cycle the glow plugs 4 times???? i just turn the key to the on position and wait about 20-30 seconds after the light goes out when its around 20F or lower and she always fires right up. when u say cycle the olugs 4 times, how long do you let them cycle for??
once the up and down line goes out in the dash i try and start it. thats what the dealer told me to do.crank for a while and nothing, turn key off again and on again till light goes out and try again.
yes, when its that cold, you should wait for the light to go out and wait about 10 seconds or more depending how cold it it, the colder it is, the longer you should wait. the longest i have left it after the light went out was 45 seconds, this is when it was around 0 degrees without it plugged in, but she fired right up....she was a little rough for about a minute or to though cuz it was so cold
i think someone sais they will stay on for a minute after the light goes out, if you havent driven your truck and its cold, go out now and try it, you will see how easy it starts
I have an 02 with 30k on it and have the same exact problem. The service manager told me the same thing (you would think they worked for the same ford store) after he said the glow plugs and relay tested OK. I kept complaining until he put a relay in. I will have to wait until it gets colder out to see if it was the reley. It does make sence to wait 30 seconds or so after the light goes out to start it.
did this happen recently? did he say the reley could be bad and not send a code. were you waiting 20 to 30 sec after the light went out to try and start the truck?
The plugs will stay on for up to 2 minutes after the light goes off, depending on oil and ambient air temperature. Both of my PSD's will start with no problem below -30º let alone +30º . You probably have a bad glow plug relay or some bad glow plugs. With only 28,000 miles I would guess the relay. Check the voltage drop across the two big terminals on the relay.
I was told the relay can test ok and stil be bad. We have a diesel shop just down from the office and they are telling me it can be bad and still test ok.
I guess it depends out how they are testing it
Get a multimeter and check the voltage at the glow plug side of the relay right after you turn the key on in the morning. If the relay is good and carrying the load the voltage drop will only be maybe a tenth of a volt less than the side that goes to the battery. That's assuming all the glows plug are good and drawing a load. If you have a burned out relay the voltage on the glow plug side of the relay will drop way off = only lukewarm glow plugs.
