Detonation (aka spark knock or ping) is a condition where the fuel mixture burns (for lack of a better description) awkwardly and too soon. If you want a more detailed description, a google search should yield several potential articles that will describe in more technical detail what detonation is. The problem is, when the combustion mixture ignites too soon, it is pushing down on the piston while the piston needs to come up. This can destroy the piston. If you don't hear the engine pinging (sounds like a marble rattling around in a can kind of), then you're probably not doing any damage. I would try to find a new EGR tube and fix it, but it's not one of those, "stop the car now and tow it" kind of things, unless the engine is pinging real bad.
hi mrshorty thank you for that info i have a question can't i just use a rubber hose/line and clamp it on to what is left of the pipe. or it that a bad idea
i have been to autozone and all they find is the valve in the parts cat.
is there a name for the tube.
Should be EGR tube or something to that effect. It does seem that people have a hard time finding that part -- Might have to settle for the junkyard.
I wouldn't use rubber for that tube -- it sees hot exhaust gases. I'm not sure exactly how hot exhaust manifolds can get, but I expect it's hot enough to "burn rubber "
