Got mine done - complete with fuel injection. Unfortunately, the fuel pump was too weak to atomize the fuel. It also sprung a leak so I canned it. Waiting to find a new pump.

I've been playing around with it for a long time and did a lot of rsearch on them. Maybe I can help answer your questions.

Ask away.

The kits you can buy are kinda spendy compared to what it costs to make one. They're also not the best thing for your engine. They cut out a spark plug to get unburnt fuel down the exhaust. Unfortunately, some of that fuel washes down the cyl. into the oil too - not good. You can't really do that while you're driving either unless you don't mind the sputtering.

On my first setup, I just pulled the choke out and made it run REALLY rich. Got about 1-2 foot backfire-like flames. After about 4-5 times of doing that, I changed the oil and there was a LOT of gas in it.

There was a thread on with a website or something on this a while back, its really cheap to do on your own from what i remember, but they search doesn't work for me anymore, if someone could search and find this for him (and myself as i'm also interested in this) i'd appreciated it.

Go to the exhaust forum, click 'Search This Forum' and type 'flamethrower'.

It worked for me but I don't know how to post a link to another thread.

There's a guy named Rick (98 Snake Eater)
HERE
that pretty much knows everything about it. I think he has a business installing them. That's where I got my info for making mine.

They're pretty easy to make, especially the electronics. It's the fuel injection that takes some trial and error. The key is to get the proper placement of the plugs and the fuel nozzles and the right jet size in the nozzles. Fuel pressure is also key to get the atomization of the fuel.

For the spark generator, you need a switch, a relay, a condensor, a ballast resistor, a coil, and a spark plug. To make duals, just use two of everything except the switch.

What you do is wire the relay so that when you push the button, the relay closes the outgoing side and sends a charge to the coil, and immediately cuts power to itself. It'll then open the outgoing circuit (cutting power to the coil) and close the incoming causing it to close the outgoing side again. As long as you hold the button in, it'll cycle on and off several times a second giving you a continuous spark.

The condensor goes between the ground terminal of the relay and the ground source (frame).

The ballast resistor goes between the between the pos. output of the relay and the pos. terminal of the coil.

I have diagrams if you need 'em.

Hope this helps.

Do you mean how big of a flame?

Currently, I can get only about 1-2 foot backfire-like flames. The fuel pump I was using doesn't have enough pressure to atomize the fuel so it won't ignite, and the fuel solenoid isn't working right. I have to replace those two things before I can get the fuel injection part to work properly.

I'm hoping for 5-6 foot flames when it's done, but they may be bigger.

That would be cool, what I am really looking for is plans for the propane style since I own a diesel, I want it to have a continuous flame, large and if I am driving in the parking lot or where ever else I can hit the button and have a flame.
I know that some of the cars I have seen can do that with gas and as they take off down the road they have a continuous flame but I want mine with PROPANE!!! LOL

But please send that one as well, because I do have dual tanks!! I could always disconnect the front tank and run just gas and have a continuous flame as well, just want tall flames, I have 2 4" stacks on my truck. I know, I am tooooo picky!!!!

smokestack,

CLICK HERE for the diagrams. These are from the guy that does it professionally on flameit.com (98 Snake Eater). He has all the electrical and fuel injection diagrams, but no propane last I looked. Go to the link I posted earlier in this thread and you'll find some talk of using propane.

Propane gets a little trickier as it needs more oxygen to burn than gas does. You'll also go through a LOT of propane. I'm told that the small Coleman lantern sized propane cyl's. will last only a few blasts. I have a LP flame thrower for burning brush that hooks to a gas grill tank, and I can empty one of those things in a few minutes.

I haven't played with diesel, but I've heard of people using that too.
