Do all trucks have 31 spline axles? What if any trucks had 28 spline axles? I'm changing my gearing from 4.11 to 3.50 and I am wondering what 9 in to look for out of the junk yard that had 28 splines and 3.50 gear ratio.
early bronco all had 28 spline, junk yard shopping you need early bronco axles, they were a different length than any other ford, so pickup, van, etc will not work. now I think some of the older mustangs had 28 splines, so if you are lookin for a center section, I think that is what you need, most trucks and vans had 31 splines, so It would not be a drop in conversion, unless you got a 31 spline housing and bought some 31 spline axles( a good upgrade if youre breaking axles anyhow).
A 31 spline will not fit though the end of the carrier or the bearings!
P.s I have ran in to this before ,I ended up going with a full spool that bolted
right in! Make sure that if you plan on trading out carriers that the bearing
bore in the case are of the same size there are 3 sizes .

To answer the question about what has 31 and what has 28 spline in p/u's if I recall properly '73' is the magic number. before 28 after 31. I know my 71 had 28 and my 74,76 and everything else since then where 31.
( SP3006 ) as far as 73 being the magic # I have had enuff 73-79 trks to fill
a parking lot , and have never ran across one of mine that was 31 spline .
I do know there out there ! I just keep missing out on them .

It also depends on whether it is a 2 or 4wd and F100 and 150. My 77 4wd has 31 splines, my 76 F100 2wd had 28. A friend has a 75 F100 4wd with 31s and a 76 F100 4wd with 28's. I've never seen a 78 or later 4wd with 28's, but I've seen 2wds both ways into the early 80's.
