engine swap 6 to v8
engine swap 6 to v8
I have an 82 F150 4x4 with the 300 6 that is shot. It has the 4 speed manual trans. I would like to replace it with a 302 V8. I know the accessory brackets have to be changed and motor mounts and towers but will the existing bellhousing bolt up to the 302? Any suggestions on doing this swap will be appreciated.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Apr-02 AT 06:55 PM (EST)]If you look at this website

it is interesting to look at the footnotes for the up to 81 blocks and the 82 up blocks where it talks about the early and late dampers causing vibration. So I think it was around 81 to 82 when they changed the balance and you might be able to look for those numbers on your damper to see what balance you have.

I would not recommend swaping to V8 unless you have a healthy budget. I did the swap from 300 to 302 (335hp)in my 81 F100 and have regret it ever since (financially). The 300 is a great motor, you can build it to push the power you need a lot cheaper than a complete engine swap. Just my opinion...

If the motors shot, he could rebuild it.. depends on the condition of the engine, but if you're gonna swap to a V8, swap to a 351w, not a 302... you'd get alot more bang for your buck with a 351, and alot more potential than a 302 if you're planning on modifying it. Just my opinion..

Either way - motor mount PERCHES are going to be a big deal.
-Not the mounts themselves, the sadles on the frame that they bolt to.
The passenger side one is a bolt in. The nut on the underside can be a piece of work to reach and is a different size from the bolt head (Ask me how I know!)
The DRIVER side one is the problem. It has rivets holding it to the frame, and must be cut out of the donor vehicle with a torch.
The "P" side one I found was marked conspicuously "WINDSOR ONLY".
But the thing you want to watch for is that a 302 with standard mounts is likely to have a 1" gap between the mounts and perches on both sides if the wrong one is used.
It's a pity I can't just find a taller engine mount. They're only $10 each, and easy to get.
