I have a recently rebuilt 351w form an 83 1 ton with a man. tranny, and I plan on swapping it into my 81 f-150 custom 4x4. I was wondering, besides mounts what else would i need besides exhaust?
Right now I have the 300 six cylinder with the man.tranny in there. I know the bellhousing will be the same, so I'm not worried about that, and I have the bigger clutch on order.
I've heard that the frame perches are different, if I need them should I just go to the junkyard to get them?
thanks for your help
i know this has been covered before, but searching for the previous threads has been a pan in the butt.
You are going to want to check the accessorys for hose and wiring rerouting and length. Also I'd invest in a bigger radiator which might require custom fitting the hose if the inlet or outlet is different.
I've got the radiator from the 1 ton, will that fit in the f-150? All of the hoses are with the motor and radiator. and i believe that the wireing harness is the same as that used on the v8's
The radiator should drop right in. If not there are WAYS to make it fit. The thing with the wiring is if the accessorys on the v8 are in the same place as the 6. If they're not will your wires reach to where they are? Swaps are never boring. They may bring out destructive tendencies once in awhile but they're never boring. Good luck
thanks stretch351c,
rewiring won't be a hassle, I'm pretty good at that.
One question though, where do the motor mounts from the 351w attach to the frame? Are they in the same location as the six, just different mounts, or are the frame perches different?
