I was just reading a tech article on changing trans fluid in the tech section, and it said DON'T use mercon V in the E4OD, I changed the trans fluid last fall in my E4OD and the parts store said to use mercon V, why can't you use mercon V and what will it do
It will wear the transmission out early. There won't be an immediate failure, but if you continue to run MERCON V in an E4OD have some money put away for a rebuild sooner than expected.
wow!! why would the parts store say thats what that trans takes for fluid, did they come with mercon V. is that what ford recommended, so I should use just mercon atf??
The E4OD came with MERCON, not MERCON V. Ford recommends MERCON for the E4OD, not MERCON V.
MERCON V is a newer fluid than MERCON. Many people that don't know assume that since it is newer it is recommended to replace MERCON. That just isn't so.
If that were my truck I'd change the fluid this weekend and use a MERCON fluid. If you like synthetic, and I do, use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. It is a MERCON fluid.
I went to the dealer today, and they say anything after 1992 to put mercon V in it, and ford recommends it if you have any torque shutter, I'm confused, so I phoned a well known tranny shop, and told him the story, he asked if I was pulling a trailer or anything, if so leave it in, if not change it to dextron atf, and use the old mercon V in my 1986 C6(cause it needs to be changed aswell), it won't effect it cause the C6 doesn't have clutches in the torque.
got worried and changed it today to ATF, drained the torque converter( get this I moved the truck on to the cement pad to drain the oil, I pulled the rubber plug on the bell housing, to get to the bolt to drain the torque and the bolt was right there, whats the odds of that, with out hitting the starter 10 times trying to find it) drained the pan I had a drain plug in it, then I blew air into the torque and flushed the cooler
