Talking 72cc or 76cc heads

Looking at installing the Edelbrock Alum. heads and see there are 72 and 76cc units avail at the same price. Any comments on which to use and why?

My only thought would be that they offer two for compression management. I would stick to the 72cc, that's about factory....

The 76cc heads are used to lower compression on larger motors like 427's and 428's to make 'em work with pump gas. I'd stick with the 72's.

Also the 76cc Edelbrock heads only have the vertical bolt pattern for the exaust manifolds. Just something to keep in mind...G.

Are you talking about the 352 cast into the block? If so then you probably have an FE engine which these do fit, like the 390 they are mounted on right now. The engine is still in the stand and has not been run yet. That is a 360 or 390, maybe some others, but there are guys here who can tell you a LOT more than I can.

If they still have the stock size valves then they will fit the 4.00" bore 352. The CJ valves might cause cylinder wall issues. Although I think it would take a lot of lift to contact the wall.

Just one thing to keep in mind - I ordered the 72cc Edel heads and that's even what the box said when I got them, but we cc'd them and they were actually 76cc heads. I've heard that this is fairly common with the Edels.

Well, I left it in the hands of my trusty machinist, who is a pretty good head guy and race motor builder... he was recommending compression in the area of about 10.5 to 11:1 for my 390, with the aluminum heads, and instead of splurging on an expensive set of custom pistons, he shaved the heads down to 68cc and ended up with 10.6:1. He was planning on cutting them even if they had come in at 72cc as marked. But since then, people seem to cringe when I tell them that we cut a set of $1200 heads, so I don't know if that was the best thing to do or not. I never even questioned it, I just trusted him.
