Does anyone have any experience with them?
Do they install & set everything up?
The programming seems good, hows the reception?

I've been looking at going that route for my Tennessee address instead of Comcast cable. The price is cheaper with dish network and seems like I will get a better deal with more channels.

Wanting to get opinions before I commit and set up a install date.

 

i have had dish for many years (in two different houses), the pict is great and they will install everthing and it will usally be up and running buy the time they leave

 

I had it, moved, got it again, moved, got DirectTV, when I move again I am going back to Dish network. You will lose it once in a while in a big thunderstorm (or in blizzards which I know you are familiar with even though you have left us). Reception is either great or absent, not really any in between.

 

Actually haven't left ya yet & this weather is starting to tease me a little. I even had the motorcycle out and running around today.
3 weeks and counting. The end of the month is when I'm officially leaving. Just changing addresses and such so I won't have to do much when I get there xcept enjoy the warmer temps for a few days.

Yeah, I've had directv before & have to say they suck. The one and only year I had it I subcribed to that Sunday Ticket. Every game I wanted to watch seemed to be blacked out.....

 

I have Dish with no problems. And they have Sirius!!!

 

I have Dish now and love it. Used to have Directv and it was great also. I think dish is a little better though.

 

I have dish and love it, but they could have did a little better job on the installation. They wont take any more time than they have to, which means the cable is run outside of your house and then fed through the outside wall. I have 3 tv's hooked to it, so I now have 3 black cables running down the outside of my house. Works great, but looks sloppy in my opinion. I would try to be there personally when they do the install and see if you can talk them into a better way.

 

When I had a house I had Dish. I did my own install. Simple really if you know how to read a compass.

I am on cable now because me apt makes it such a pain to get dish (extra deposit, extra rent, and it cannot be attached to the structure) but if/when I get myself a house again I will get Dish.

 

they don't mount the dish to the home do they?

that will be a big no no.

this is a rental home I will be going into. I have permission from the owner to have a dish installed as long as it isn't mounted to the house.

No. DSS (aka Dish or DirecTV) uses RG-6 cable. Cable TV uses RG-59. You need to mount the dish to the house or on a post outside. Typical cable TV has runs all over the house and for DSS to work properly the runs need to be direct without splices and splits. Every split introduces loss and can cause the video to break up.

 

I have the dish mounted on a 4x4 post in the yard, It works great. I did just run the cable from the dish to the cable hook ups on the house and it works fine.

 

From what I have seen channel surfing is impossible or just downright time consuming with dish or direct TV. I like to surf so I use cable.

 

Yeah, my Dad, when he had a satellite dish, he mounted it in his back yard, about 3 feet off the ground, on a buried post. He did it by himself, including making all the adjustments, and it didn't take him long at all. This was back when DTV was about the only real alternative to cable in his neck of the woods.

Anyway, I also have Dish Network, and I am really happy with it, aside from not having sprung for the whole enchilada where the programming is concerned (I don't really watch all that much TV anyway.). Our local cable company's offerings are great and in some ways better than my Dish programming package, but one of my friends who still retains cable service is CONSTANTLY complaining that there are interminable screen freezes and cable outages. I haven't had that problem with Dish. I also pay around $25.00 less per month.

If you get one of the package deals with Dish Network, they will come out and install, taking about 2-3 hours. And it's true that they run the cables from the dish through your walls in a very basic and aesthetically unlovely fashion, but that's not a problem for me, as the cabling isn't easily viewed, even by me.

It's worth it.

 

Dish rocks. We've had it for like 4 years. Ours is Dish500 and the reciever is WebTV capable, but we dont use that.

For those who did your own install, how can you add a dishbox to another room? I have a box with a card, but I can't seem to hook it up...or do I have to call Dish? Thanks.

 

I have the Dish system for a year now, and have had some reception troubles after a storm, or during, but any satelite system will with the storms we had... They got out as soon as they could to reset the dish. It can be mounted anywhere, as long as it has a clear path to the satelite. As for the cables, it can be run underneath the floor joists if you have access, that's just a matter of the installer. I have just one cable coming into the main terminal, then it disappears into the house.
On the surfing, I can surf pretty fast on our system, can make a full round in less than a minute... it shows 5 channels at a time...push the button, five more different channels... The directv isn't as nice that way, at least the father in law's isn't, nor my parents.
