I had mine since 95 and it works great. Got the 6'dish on a 12' tall 4" metal pole. Did it myself with the help of my wife and some rope&pulleys to get it up in place. Now the small dish work up her. Good thing about the 6' is when the weather is bad I still get signal. Only time it goes out is in a all-out blizzard. Got the PVR package. Great for recording, pausing and rewinding tv. Wish it would allow you to watch one program while recording another. Have cable at work and I can go through the dish guide 10x faster then cable. I have my favorits, my wife has hers and our kids have their own. This was my only option were I live so it was either Dish or RATNET. Rurual Alaska Televesion Network. No cable option since I am 15 miles out of town. We have a second box in out guest bedroom. My dish has two out. YOu can also divide those and run 4 boxes from you dish if needed. Sound like you need to call Dish and have them activate the box. Been great for the remote locations us here. Had it on the Slope when I worked up there. Only link to civilization for months. Worked fine almost all the time.
I've had Dish for about 9 years. Thunder storms and wind have never been a problem and I've never had to re-adjust the antenna. I have had to brush snow off the antenna 3 times when the signal started to pixilate. I installed the system myself.
Just a few weeks ago I had Dish upgrade me to Dish 500 which they did for free. It cost me close to $1,100 originally and now they will do a 3 or 4 room install for free and include a DVR with a 1 year commitment. Dish has been outstanding for me.
Got Direct TV here because my g/f had it moved here since she had signed a year's contract with them. I had cable tv along with my internet but dropped the tv part. My problem with cable was that more than a few times, some farmer plows up the fiber optic cable that feeds our area so we loose everything. I can live without the internet as long as I have television.
The installation was quick and I have yet to loose reception, even during a heavy thunderstorm. My overall cost per month is cheaper too since I dropped the cable tv; 30 dollars a month cheaper!
I was getting 53 channels with cable for 39 a month. I get over twice that now with for same money.
But I must say...there are times when there is nothing worth watching, even with over 130 channels.
I have Directv and can't complain. I do qualify for my local channels and I get them all, but some other people I know who live nearby have Dish network and they can't pick up certain channels like Fox, because the nearest Fox affiliate station somehow can block them from picking it up, even though they live so far away from it they can't pick it up with a rooftop antenna. Not sure how that works, but you might want to check and see which local channels you can or cannot get with Dish before committing.
I like my Dish system.
Be careful of the installers, though. Around here, they are sub contracted and will do a slip shod job if given half a chance. They forgot pieces of cable all over the yard in my last house, and in this one they installed in the crawlspace...well, I went under there for a plumbing issue and the cable is laying in loose spools everywhere, not an inch of it suspended as it should be.
On the upside, one of them forgot a nice Maglight and didnt leave any info to contact him.
Oh, oh yah. The FIRST time I had them install it, the installer came back 3 times, couldnt get it working, then said "I'm going to go out for an hour and pick up a tester," and just never came back
I've had Dish Network for over 10 yrs. I love it. I did my own install, even when I moved last year. Once you figure out about where it needs to point, it's easy. they will help you over the phone. They will do installs also, plus "dishmover"(if you move and want them to do it)
I have an extra dish that I have in car trailer. When I travel, I take my rec'r and set up where ever I'm at. All my channels, WHERE EVER I go!
Yes, with any bad rainstorm, you will tend to lose signal for the moment that the really bad black cloud is overhead(or inline with signal), but it is usually just a breif few minutes and you're back on again. How many times have you seen "cable" go down for days after a bad storm since the lines got torn down when the pole fell??? Ya, I'll take a couple minutes over DAYS!. You don't ever get your money back for days lost do you??? NOT!!!
I like the guide listing on Dish. I've seen the others and don't like them. Guess I'm biased
I have Dish Network and it's awesome. I committed to one year with them, and they gave me a DVR for basically nothing. Zero problems with installation, reception, or outages. Of course, we rarely get severe weather in the SF Bay Area. The only rumbling around here comes from underneath the ground.
Before you get one in an apartment, condo, or any kind of rental unit, I would advise you to check out the FCC faq on antenna placement. It basically bars the owner of the property from telling you that you can't have one, it bars extra fees, and it even bars them from making you ask permission before you install one. The guy above who said that he lives in a place where they do all those things is breaking the law. The trouble is that people generally don't know what their rights are.
My HOA tried to tell me to take mine down. I sent them the FAQ and told them they were breaking the law, and if they had any questions, they could the call the FCC's toll-free number. That was the end of it.
Might not be the prettiest thing but if you take an empth 1-gallon milk jug, cut it in half then place it over the receiver on the sat it does help with heavy snow and rain. At least it has help up here.
I don't have dish because of line-of site problems . So it's Comcast Cable . They're just o.k. Wish I had the opportunity to check it out. Maybe I can get a very very long pole . Nah
It basically bars the owner of the property from telling you that you can't have one, it bars extra fees, and it even bars them from making you ask permission before you install one.
The reason why I had asked the property owner is because it just happens to be my one & only Sister that owns the house.
Gotta be courteous with family you know, And I really don't want to do something to her house with out her knowing about it. Really don't need any hard feelings either.
I know she will let me do what ever I wanted but it is still respectful to ask even though you know that the answer is "sure go ahead".
