2002 250 Sometimes won't start

Sometimes my truck will not start. This happens about once every 2 weeks. It will turn over and over, but that is all. So, I go back inside the house/store/gym or wherever for 20 minutes, come back out, and it usually starts right up.

A friend said I might have an air pocket in the oil system because of not completely filling up the oil filter at the last oil change. So, I put on a new filter that was filled to the top. 3 weeks later, on stopping for fuel with a wife, 7 month old, and 3 year old, on a cold and rainy day, it would not start. She was not thrilled when she found out we all had to get into the gas station restaurant for half and hour. If I can't get this figured out soon, she's threatening a MINIVAN!!!! HELP!!!

You didn't say if the motor is up to operating temp or not . I doubt not filling the oil filter has anything to do with the problem though . It sound like a fuel delivery problem . Or it could be the dreaded CPS ( cam postion sensor ) .

I had a similar problem with my 02. It didn't want to start sometimes when the motor was warm or hot. It turned out to be the IPR. My truck was still under warranty so they replaced my HPOP and it still cost me the $100 deductible. The hpop needs at least 500 psi to fire the injectors, so if the regulator is sticking it won't build up enough pressure to fire. Do a search on IPR. Good luck. Its a pain to fix a problem that is intermitent.

The last time it happened was 5 minutes after getting fuel on the highway. So it was definitely up to operating temp. It has also happened after I had gone into a store for an hour, so cool or cold.

I also neglected to mention that I took it to the dealer. It failed to start when I first dropped it off. By the time I had finished the paperwork and talking to the service rep, it started. They kept it for a week and could never duplicate the problem. Their computer said everything was fine. So, basically, they would not change any parts because the computer would not tell them which part to change.

I'll look into IPR and HPOP. Not sure what those are since I'm a rookie, but it's about time to learn...

Thanks,

GK

the HPOP is the high pressure oil pump which is your high pressure fuel pump.

IPR is the injector pressure regulator.

The IPR is in the HPOP.

At first mine would rarely not start, but it got worse and worse until it died on me at a red light and it wouldn't start until it cooled back down. I changed my cam sensor thinking it was that, but at $200 they aren't cheap.

Try this, get the motor good and warm, hot but not to hot, and turn the engine off, wait a few minutes and try to start it back up. A couple times when mine started backup it died shortly after it started and wouldn't start until it cooled back down. I'm not to sure on how the HPOP works but I'm guessing that on a hot engine the oil being used in the HPOP is thinner and with the IPR sticking, its harder to get to 500 psi to fire the injectors.

I'm not sure this is even your problem but the symptoms sound just like mine.

Third time is the charm...

So, it was the IPR. Thanks for all the help! It was at the dealer for a week (third visit to the dealer). Of course, it started up for the dealer every day. Just like the first two visits. And they would not change any parts if the computer did not tell them what to change. Anyway, so I go to pick up the truck last night and it won't start. Can you believe it! Of course, their diesel mechanics had gone home for the day, but at least the main service manager guy came out and witnessed it.

So they call me this morning and say it was the IPR and they would have it ready this afternoon. This whole time I have been telling them what you guys have said. But until the computer told them they wouldn't do anything. At least it is free. I was about to take it to my mechanic and have start replacing parts...

Thanks again for the help. Hope this helps others!
