Hi Folks, greetings to you all from an American car lover in the UK.
I've seen a couple of posts about the problem of converting the rear stop/side/flashers so that they are legal over here and I would really appreciate some advice in respect of my '03 Explorer XLT.
My plan was simple: to cut the brake feed up near the pedal, wire the flashers into the reversing lamps with yellow bulbs, add an extra lamp at the back for the reversing lights and take the brake feed directly into the lamps at the back.
This works fine EXCEPT as soon as it's all connected up I can't get the DARN thing into gear.
The advice given on the other threads is to join the wires in the column, but what about the ABS?
Can anyone help me out please - or point me towards an Explorer wiring diagram on the web. A book is no good because it will take weeks to get here and I need to use my truck asap.
p.s. my 'other car' is a Mustang GT convertible, which I shipped over here a couple of years ago. That was easier to wire because the brake switch was different.
Thanks to anyone out there who can help.

We are pleased you have chosen the best source for Fords!
You have a very late model, so I don't have any wiring diagrams to go by, but it sounds like you cut the wrong wire at the brake pedal, or this same wire branches off downstream and releases the shifter interlock solenoid.
I don't know much about the interlock system, but I do know you can't get it out of park till you push on the brake, so it must use the signal you cut to release the interlock.
You could put everything back like it was, and use the highmount third brake light wire to feed your back brake lights. You could find it back there at the tailgate, and run it down to the lights. And you could also tie the front turnsignals into into the rear amber/backup/turn lights you have added to get them going.
We did exactly what Franklin2 said, and it worked perfectly. Granted, it was a different vehicle, but the end result should be the same. I didn't have to do anything in the steering column. Ran a wire from the left front signal to the right front, then ran them down the frame rail to the rear. Wired the brake/tail signals into the center high mount. Worked great.
