Ok, I developed a leak in my rear tank of which I hadn't been aware, and while out in the field with the truck on the side slope such that the fuel ran away from the pickup, the system ran dry, and it took a lot of monkeying around to get it fired back up. Now, is surges on decel, it will drop, rev, drop, rev, quite quickly and violently, and it also has a point where it seems as if I had just hammered the pedal about halfway through the rpms to the next shift. The rev was always there, just not as pronounced. I'm thinking something got damaged in the pump from the dry cranking. It runs fine other than those two points, and it seems to have the diesel cold rattle longer...
I dont think that you did any damage to the pump but you may have picked up some gunk from the bottom of the tank and it needs a good dose of power service or some good additive and a new filter. I found some stuff called "Lubricity" by fppf and it helped to smooth out the old truck engine. Also sounds like you have some air in the system. Hope this helps out. I'm fresh out of nickels now.
Could be the fuel pickups are broken off, a standard problem. Is the fuel tank at 1/4 full that is when problems arise as driver is convinced he has more fuel but in fact he is at/or above the fuel. This presents surging and any fuel tank angle change adds or eliminates fuel available.
the guage doesn't work, I have to go by milkeage until I get the senders replaced, but no, it does it right after being filled too. I knew my front was low, but the rear should have had more than it did, due to the leak. The sidehill and steep slope did me in... I had just climbed a steep hill to get there, and then it was sloped away from the pickups, so the fuel level was low. I put fuel in the tank, then had to prime the lines to get it going again. After that, it runs fine, other than when i lift on the throttle for going down a hill or slowing to stop. It runs smooth going down the road, and at idle, just not when I let off to slow down, and that sudden burst of speed at about 3/4 of the power band. I'm starting to suspect a governor problem.
There could be a possibility it is the governor flex ring disintegrating plugging the IP check valve on the return. The increased pressure in the IP can shut down the engine at idle or slowdown. The sudden burst of speed could be atributed to a leaned out fuel supply to, is it continuous after it comes or just here and gone.
it happens every time, consistent as can be, was there before this happened, just not as pronounced. When I go to slow down, it slows, then burst of speed, slows, burst of speed, just like letting off, then hit the pedal, and let off, and hit the pedal, but faster than I can do it. but the flip side, when i am accellerating, it steadily speeds up, then takes off like a scalded dog 3/4 of the way through the powerband. I generally let off the pedal at that point, but it still accelerates some. It isn't acting like lack of fuel, experienced that enough figuring out the range on the tanks, and get surprised. When i replace the box, the senders are getting done too. The rear tank is a bear to get out, I have a big ol' ag bumper, and it extends most of the way under the tank, preventing it from being dropped very easily. Beyond those two symptoms, the engine runs fine, fires fine, cruises fine.
Ok, here's what I did, and take your pick which actually fixed the problem. I went ahead and installed an electric fuel pump, a Holley red, tell you what, that's one nice and quiet running pump. Also, I figured out the elbow coming out the top of the injector pump was a shade loose, because it had to be positioned a certain way for the return fuel line. I took it back off, as I had disturbed it before, and sealed it with pipe thread sealer. No more surging, and no more air in the lines type actions.
i,ve been having the same problem with mine for the past 6 months and could not figure out what it was..well popped the hood and my return line where it turns to rubber just before the ip is dry rot as heck....can't believe i missed that all this time..so stoopid...going to replace tomorrow....but i do love the surge in power i got sometimes....would run like a raped ape....wish it did that all the time
Well, I also found it to be apparently advancing the timing, like when it is cold... too bad it wouldn't do that when it IS cold started... I just unhooked it and it stopped that. The surge in power is ok, but it gets annoying when it keeps doing it when you are trying to maintain a steady speed.
