1983 F-150 Problems

I have an '83 F-150 with a 302 engine and an AOD transmission. I was driving it back and forth to work with no problems other than shifting a little rough. Then one day I went to leave and it was stuck in 1st gear and wouldnt go above 3500rpm. I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks

I have been looking over the engine for vacuum leaks. Just about every vacuum hose is either plugged with a stick or a screw. There are a few places where there is no hose at all. You can obviously tell it has been like this for a long time. But if that is the problem then why would it all of the sudden start messing up?

Thanks

Sounds like the kick down off of your carb may have come out of adjustment. Look for the steel rod that is hooked onto the left side of the carb and goes down to the transmission. Check to make sure it is hooked to the carb and crawl underneath and make sure it is hooked to the transmission and nothing obvious is wrong.

There is a small adjustment screw at the carb. If that screw is in, back it out most of the way then drive and see if it is better. If the screw is out already set it in the middle so you have some adjustment room there then you will need to adjust the way it is set at the transmission. There is a nut there that you can adjust it with. You are trying to get that little lever on the transmission to be higher so adjust so that the lever travels up the rod. A little adjustment will go a long way so just go a couple tuurns of the nut then test drive it. If it is close then you can fine adjust it at the carb.

If you have adjusted the rod to it's limits and it still won't shift you will probably have to pull the pan off and unstick the valves.

I have a c-6, there is a vaccum line that goes from the intake to a modulator on the side of the tranny. It the hose is off, or the modulator is bad it won't hardly shift. Don't know if the AOD has the same setup or not.

If that is not it, you may won't to change the fluid and filter, and try that.

Well, I have finally fixed my problem. My spring on the shift linkage inside the transmission had come off somehow. I replaced the spring and put the linkage back in order and it now runs fine. It shifts out and revs up to normal speed. I really appreciate everyone who gave me ideas about fixing my problem.

Thanks
