I just updated my gallery. You will find a pic of the VIN plate that is on the drivers door. I havent checked the frame yet to see if they match. Will let everyone know when I do
Well that's a nice looking 1966 pickup you have there... The VIN tag is off another vehicle (probably the 68) What you will want to do is locate the vin stamped on the frame. It will be on the passenger side, top of the rail, between the coil spring mount and the radiator support. Based on what I see, it should start F10D...... Reason being, you have an F100 (F10) with a FE motor (D code), probably a 352 unless it was swapped out as well.
I checked the frame on the passenger and drivers side and found nothing. I went under the truck with a scraper, wire brush, and a mirror and found nothing. I went along the top rail both top and bottom, checked the center of the rail and bottom and still nothing
It is there.
The inner fender may be hanging over it.
Try some light sandpaper on the rail as well.
A little moisture, just enough to dampen the rail may help bring out contrast to show the numbers.
They are not very deep, they are quite shallow, but they are there.
You may need to keep digging, mine was hard to read and I had no sheetmetal in the way and was staring straight at it... Lots of cleaner and bright light may do the trick.
According to the vin on that door tag, the truck that tag was from was built in March of 1968 as a 68 model truck....whats the dso say....that is a poor looking tag...hard to read....plus you can see the old rivets below it....another good way to tell which year is the core support/radiator mount style to it....if the support has brackets which go towards engine bout 3-4 inches, thats a 65 unit, if the support is flush with radiator brackets that are kinda L shaped to bolt to flush type support, thats a 66 unit...also radiator, if original will have a month and yr date code plus beginning of part number....C5 or C6T so on and so forth....
i also did some more digging in my book...on the RH railbetween 1st 2 crossmembers, on the face of rail facing outboard of truck there is an actual frame build date and part number.....it is in 3 rows readable as you stand facing it(not upside down stamp)
1st row for a 65 F100 4X2 frame is a C5TA, 66 year will be a C6TA
2nd row is the suffix which denotes the specific application....
65 F100 short bed 2WD is H, 66 F100 short wheelbase 2WD is BJ.
The 3rd row is the actual frame assy build datewould read like 22 D SEP, which is 22nd of September, the D I strongly believe is the week of month built...22nd is in 4th week of Sept., thus the D being 4th letter. I will go look for mine on both of mine a bit later, but thats the info for 65 and 66 1/2 ton short bed 2WD trucks. I will dig up the 67 and 8 stuff later, but my guess is someone probably just swapped door tags out....
So you have a '68 Donor Door Tag and an F100 that originally came with the 352 from Michigan built February of 1966. Congratulations, you're 39 this month!
Thanks to all for the help. At least now I know its a 66 and when to celebrate its birthday. Any other info I can get from the real vin would be great. Agaian it is F10YL826472 if you could break it down for me it would be good as I never read what info comes from a vin.
Congrats!!!! it is a late feb truck...so could be a March build...reason I say this is my number shows as a June 65 build, but on my trannt pto cover is the tag which has its build date which is July 1 of 65....If you got a NP435 tranny, go under RH side of truck and scrape a bit and it should be there....if you remove it for cleaning, be quick as when the bolts are removed you will get a leak of 90W oil...Also, look on the RH frame face like I mentioned above for the frames build date....see how long it sat in storage till truck built....If you look at many places, there are codes to the component cast date, like engine components...the intake m/fold is easiest....its front and center...Also, if the engine is original there should be a metal tag in the coil area or on dipstick to block reaining bolt....But you do have a 66 truck....now if the DMV wanna bug ya more about it....you can show them that the proof is in the pudding....albeit a little less tasty...hehehe
Congrats on your find....makes ya feel great I know
Thank you very much for the info. You know it blows me away with the support offered by everyone on this site. When I was building my 89 GMC race truck I didnt find help anywhere because no one was building V6's as a competetive threat at the time, so I was on my own.
You better check your title and registration for accuracy. If they match the door tag you have problems and you will have bigger problems if you get pulled over by the heat. You may pull it off if the officer is a 20 something and doesent know the difference between a 66 and a 68. The real problem could be the history of the truck. It could have been stolen or there could be a lien against it. Not trying to scare anyone to death but this is something to be aware of.
