My 1993 F150 XLT 4x4 (302) does not shift smoothly. It has a rebuilt automatic transmission that thumps when it downshifts. This thump is much more noticeable when in overdrive. I bought the truck used so I don't know if this is typical of this model. Aamco transmission shop tells me the transmission unit is operating properly. Is this typical? Any recommendations? (does a shift kit help?)
I have a 93 F150 302 5.0L 2wd and have the same problem.Overdrive tends to be worse than drive. The dealer told me the same thing about it being "normal" it has gotton to the point where the transmission shifts from 1st to third gear. I have been told to have it rebuilt.but Cottman transmisions say they can adjust the settings without a rebuild.

I have a C4 Transmission on a 302 (1980 F100)which has been making noises, slipping ect for about 5 years. However it comes and goes. I would leave the transmission alone for now and see if you ""clunking"" Thumping"" sound is from your U JOINTS as well.
So some of the transmission noise must be normal...
They do sell a kit that modifys the transmission to shift smoother(without a shift kit)fo about 30 bucks; however you have to drill holes ect. to install it but you only have to drop the pan to install it.
OR relpacing the filter and gasket is only 5 bucks at most any auto parts store; plus fluid if you do it yourself.
Something else you can try is adjusting the shift you should have a cable that comes from your tranny to your throttle linkage with a clip that can be slid back and forth that will adjust your shift point to a degree and how hard it shifts I would try that first.
I have a 82 F-100 with the aod and I put another one before I adjusted it and Im paying for it now cause I cant find a good one so Im having to go to a C4 or C5 which is a good there stronger and then I can put a 4 barrell on easily enough.
Godbless and have a great day
