Hey guys, Ive got an '85 F-150 with the AOD tranny.. question.. how would I go about flushing the transmission myself? And what ATF should I use afterwards, and how much? My transmission fluid is getting really hot, Im sure its scorched, and when I let off the gas when passing and the truck shifts into OD the whole truck shakes. I've just never done any transmission maintenance myself and would like some info please!!!!
Check your owner's manual, it should give you the specs on what kind of fluid and how much to use. If you don't already have one, I would highly recommend you buy a service book (i.e. CHILTONS, HAYNES, etc.) it will give you the info on how to change the fluid, make sure you change the filter also. It sounds like you need to replace your transmission cooler as well, it will definitely help the fluid stay cooler.
Pull the dipstick and look at and smell the fluid. If it's brown and smells burnt, it needs changing. I don't know if the AOD torque convertor has a drain plug or not, but my c6 does and when you pull the pan to change the filter, plus drain the torque convertor, it pretty much gets all the fluid out. Pull the inspection cover off the bottom of the bellhousing and bump the engine around while looking for a small plug in the middle of an access hole in the flexplate.
MOst Aod's have a drain plug on the converter but it sounds like your torque converter may be starting to go out as well.. I hope but that may be the culprit.... and to do a full change on AOD's you need 10-12 quarts of Dextron 3 that will also fill the torque converter
