Edelbrock or Holley, depending on Personal preference.
Id say 600 is a Wee bit small for a 460....How many RPM's does she see?
Both of the above brands are incredibly easy to tune (although Ive never owned a Holley, I base that statement on reading) so do some research and purchase the one that seems right for you.
The carb you have probably just has some dirt in the idle curcuit. The Carter is very simuliar (sp)? to the Edelbrock and is easy to work on. You can buy a kit for it and take it apart clean it with some carb cleaner and blow it out good with air and should work great. I HAD an edelbrock that I would have to clean the idle circuit on about twice a year. For what you are using the truck for a 600cfm will be fine.
I had a Edelbrock 600 CFM on it originally, but it started misbehaving & I tossed on the AFB. The Idle issue has allways been there, through both engines & both Carbs. The Idle would change by as much as 500 RPM based on weather or the trucks mood or whatever. As a result I have to set my idle very high so that on the days when it wants to idle low it does not stall out. This is wasting fuel and is annoying. Both carbs are quite old & I think it's time for a new one. I just want to get the best one.
Anybody use the Demon carbs? How about Double pumper vs vacuum secondary?
Anybody use the Demon carbs? How about Double pumper vs vacuum secondary?
i hear demon carbs are very good carbs, but ive never used one so its just heresay, although they are the same as holleys, kinda like edelbrocks and carters are alike,if you wanna spend that kinda money you probably wont be let down, id say just find a used 750 holley vacuum secondary and put a rebuild kit in it, then adjust the timing to 12-14 BTDC and hold on to your seat.......as far as deciding between a double pumper or vac. secondary, stay away from the double pumper, they provide alot of power but will desimate your mileage, if this is a daily driver stick with the vacuum secondary model, a double pumper uses all 4 barrels all the time, a vac sec only opens the back 2 barrels at high rpms, allowing you to be running only 2 barrels during normal driving.
You can buy a new Holley 750 vac. fairly cheap and it will work great right out of the box. I also think you should look for a vac. leak somewhere on the truck, brake booster, heater controls, emisions, ect. Do this before you buy a carb.
