'97 psd 74k just died on the way to work this morning. No warning signs whatsoever. More than 1/2 tank fuel treated with Diesel Kleen white bottle regularly in winter months.
Been starting and running fine.
Simple loss of power and "bucking" through all downshifts. Pulled over-idle wouldn't smooth out. Shut off to wait a few minutes and restarted. Same symptoms. No warning lights on dash indicating water or anything else that I saw.
From what I have read in these forums, this sounds like a cam position sensor problem. Anyone disagree or think of something else to check first?
Ironically, it died at the Ford dealer parking lot! That is where it is sitting. A buddy of mine was on his way to work at the same place and happened by so I jumped in with him.
Thanks in advance for any advice you folks can offer!
yeah, from my primitive knowledge and not having experianced the CPS mysef, that would sound like the culprit. don't buy it from Ford though, find your closest international dealer for the best cost. good luck, best wishes its not something else...
New fuel filter 3k ago. Doesn't seem the likeliest of possibilities, but is possible. If it is cps, I am just going to have to take my lumps at the dealer this time. Nearest Intnl. dealer is over an hour away and need the truck for work. On the bright side-I won't have to pay any towing fees!!
Feel foolish not having a spare cps handy. You can bet that won't happen again.
Will let you all know the outcome.
BTW: My Ford dealer charged 185 for the CPS. I plan on getting a spare next time I go through the town with the nearest International dealer. Just commenting on how lucky (I guess) I am to have a small, local dealer. These guys shop in the same stores, eat in the same restaurants, get their hair cut at the same barber, etc. as their customers. They really can't get away with the highway robbery that some of the giant nearly anonymous dealers can.
OK-last note on the subject. I know people have complained that posters don't follow up with results so I'll tell you how it all turned out:
New CPS@ $185
New IDM@$850
Labor @110
Part Discount of -$100
= $1043 +about $60 sales tax
Grand total = about $1110.00
Cruising at 65 listening to the turbo whine: priceless.
I have to count myself lucky that I have a good local dealer that, in my estimation, treated me very fairly. I am keeping the old IDM as an emergency spare (that may or may not work after sitting for a while-maybe get it refurbished for 375 if I ever have that kind of dough laying around and after paying for future mods!) and getting a spare cps next time I get near the nearest International dealer.
Time to move on..............
It does not sound like CPS to me. They will shut the engine down like you turned the key off, no loss of power or bucking. If it was CPS when you crank it over your tach will not register any rmp's. That sounds like a fuel issue.
