let me begin by saying I don't know anything about wrenching on ford engines. My limited automotive mechanical experiences have been on a 69 chevy PU and a 76 el camino. I recently purchased a 76 f250. It has a 390 engine. the guy I got it from put points back in distributor (he pulled the breakerless ignition out of the distributor). He also pulled carb(don't know why) put on a "better" carburator(his words) and left town before he could adjust points and adjust this new carb. My truck isn't running. I have another guy who seems fairly competant looking at the truck. He gapped the points and was trying to adjust carb to no avail. After going through his manuals he came to the conclusion the carburator that's on it now will NOT work and I have to get another carb. A different model. I want to run it by you guys and see what you think.
The carb I have: Holley 4180/C 4bbl
the guy working on my truck said this carb is for a 302 mustang and will NOT work on my truck.
The carb I need: Autolite 2150 2bbl
Is this true? I've been hornswaggled before and I really hate it when that happens.
Do you have a 2 brl or 4 brl manifold? Does the truck run any at all? Try to start? Putting on an aftermarket carb, Holley, Carter, Edelbrock, etc isn't a problem as long as your truck is set up for it. Intake, etc. What kind of condition is the carb in? New, used? dirty? Even if you have a 2brl intake and a 4brl carb with a 4x2 adapter plate it will still work, just not with the benifits of running a 4brl intake.
Most 4 BBl carbs are inter-changeable amongst Ford Engines.
Usually the difference is the Auto vs Manual trans application.
They run about 650-850 cfm.
If that engine is a True 390, any Ford 4v or Holley 4v with a Ford bolt pattern will work.
The 4160 is a great carb.
A 360 will have a 2 bbl (2v) mounted on it.
