My 88 (2.9) is pretty squeaky and noisy in 4wd. The squeaking happens when I lock the hubs -- even if it's in 2wd it still squeaks while the hubs are locked. Now that I think about it, I should probably try locking one at a time and see if only one squeaks or if it's both.
Anyways it's sort of a squeaky noise and it gets faster and slower along with the truck's speed. What exactly might it be?
they may just need to be greased. pull off the wheels and take a look at the inside of ur hubs. if the hub is gettin water in it, that could be causing the sqeeking noise and if it's gettin water in it, there's an O ring that is on the spindle that is prolly worn off. mine did this and i replaced the ring and the hub no longer gets water in it.
I would bet that either the universals in the front axle or front driveshaft are shot. Factory originals and most replacement universals do not have grease fittings, so they go bad over time.
I would check the universals in the axle by locking in the hubs, engage the transfer case in 4H, and jacking up one front tire at a time. Try rotating the tire to see if there is play in the universals. You can also check the front driveshaft u-joints at the same time.
When I purchased my 87’ back in 92’ the front U-joints were shot and one was so bad that it broke the yoke on one side of the front axle. I would say that would be the place to start.
Once the hubs are locked in there is no movement, to speak of, that would cause the squeak. Thou’ it is a good idea to clean them out and repack them with grease once in a while.
If you work on the front end be sure to replace the roller bearing and all of the grease seals while you are in there and have it tore apart. I also found it real handy the have a slide hammer and the right tool to pull the spindles off.
