As I recall there is a Special Rod for Cast Steel.
We heated the whole Exhaust Manifold on a Camp Fire before welding.

Your right about Brazing, but it holds for quite a while though!

Topped off today after returning from class...18.95 mixed/city/rural (If you've been to eastern Ky, you'll know what I mean)...A/C on also...

But this was a lot of "Highway" miles too....so yea...

Even at that though, there's not much flat ground around here...

I took a trip up north to Indiana. Went up the east side of Kentucky and came back down the west side.
Sure enough. There aint no flat hills in that state at all.

Here in Alabama, they put a sharp curve at the top and bottom of every hill so your always on the brakes or the Gas.
This is a Gas mileage state too!

I'm guessing you either went through Salyersville (Where I live) or Pikeville...?

What roads did you take? Rt. 23 North?

I don't preheat, not saying it's wrong. What I use is the cheap cast iron arc rod, not the nickel stuff. V the crack out good. Weld about 1/2", then peen the crap out of it with the pointy end of the chipping hammer, until you can almost touch the metal, repeat until finished. The peening relieves the stress. When you are done welding. grind the weld and dress it with a flap wheel. If there is any undercut beside the weld it has to be welded up because that's a fracture line. I have 100% success rate with this process.

Mine gets about 22 in the wind on hilly highways. Probably 25 in optimal driving conditions on level ground.

No way i could ever say I get good mileage from ether of my 4.9's
last time I actually checked. i was getting a little over 10 mpg on my F250 2wd.
My F150 4.9 4wd. Might get the same. But I have been afraid to actually check it.
I decided to just be happy in knowing. What I have in them, how absolutely reliable and useful they are.
Neither one owes me a dime.
I can buy a lot of gas before I even get worried.
