OK GUYS NEED SOME HELP HERE. I have an 83 F100 SB Styleside. Factory 3.8V6 and non OD Tranny. Its not bad but not that great...truck is in fantastic condition but want to put different motor/tranny in it. It is almost a daily driver and I don't really do any hauling. So, what do you suggest for the swap. 300-6 or 302, and would like AOD Tranny, what's the best plan. Has factory AIR also.....thanks
I personally would go with the 300, 351w, 429-460. I have a 302 in a crown vic and its only good over 2500 rpms. the 300 is a low rpm power maker. best plan is to buy a parts truck (good running gear body shot).
I was unaware that ford ever put the 3.8 V6 into a fullsize truck. Both engines you suggest are good, I prefer the sound of a V8, but you gotta love the low end torque of the 300-6.
I would definitely go with the 300 6 cylinder and a OD transmission. I have a 302 with auto od and for what extra power I get from it, is more than severely lost in gas mileage. If you are commuting and not doing much hauling you will be much money ahead with the six.
THanks for the thoughts and suggestions. What would be a good AOD tranny, not real familiar with the different models. Looks like I am going to go with the 302. Found a totalled 88Stang GT and can get complete motor for 250.00. So, will go from there. But it has 5speed stick. As far as the 3.8 in F100. They only did it for two years, 1983 only 12percent of F100's had them. And I got one...LOL...
i would stick with the 300 if i were you.it has proven to be a real good mover with a decent milage to boot.i've used them before and have had a better tow with it than i would with the 302.if you want a good haul with a v8 and want power to kick around till eternity i'd recommend the 360 or the 390.both have the capacity to route power to a good low range and haul canolies like nothing.
i would have to agree with falcor1 on the 300.its a tough motor good on fuel and is pretty close to the same HP and TQ as the 302 check this site out for info www3.telus.net/cbradley/Engine_Specifications.html and if you plan on building it I.E. cam, headers stuff like that they sound really nice (and if it matters they do really wickit burnouts witha 5spd behind them stock)
