hello all, Chris here. I just bought a 1973 ford pickup. I thought it was a ranger, because it says ranger on the side, and on the dash board. But when I went to auto zone to get some things for it, he told me it couldnt be a ranger, because the ranger didnt come out until 1983. sooooo, what kind of truck do i have. The title dosent even say what kind it is, under the model number, it just has the first four numbers of the vin, Im so confused. Ill be honest, I dont know very much about trucks, but I plan on soaking up every bit of info I can. The first thing I get asked is what size engine is it? I dont know, how do I find out, where do I look. I know its a v-8, but thats about the extent of it. if anyone can pass on some bits of knowledge, I would very much appreciate it.
Secondly, I normally dabble in the older trucks but let me see if I can help. You very well can have a "Ranger", but it is a trim package on the older trucks, as opposed to the Ranger little truck, which came out in the truck line later. If your driver side door appears to be original to the rest of the truck, you should have a tag on there with the "VIN" number. Post the info up here, should start with F10... (assuming a F100 2 wheel drive) and the engine code will be the next letter, I believe.
You're gonna have to take comments from behind the counter chain store attendants with a grain of salt or deaf ear sometimes. Quite a number of this generation of parts peddlers don't realize names like Explorer and Ranger started out as option packages on the older F series trucks. You could enlighten them if you think it will do any good, though.
ok mike g, the drivers door does appear to be original. the plate on the edge of the door has the vin number on it. below it appears a series of numbers and letters-
it goes as follows: 133 m f261 f 4 a b47
it is a standard, and 4 wheel drive, i hope this will get me on the way. what series would this be, like f 150, f 250, i dont know, i really appreciate the help.
ok great, that help a lot, at least im on the right track. heres what that link was able to tell me:
Model Year: 73
Series: F250 - 4x4 Pickup
Engine: 8 Cyl, 360ci, 2bbl
Assembly Plant: Kansas City
Transmission: No code selected
Front Axle: No code selected
Rear Axle: No code selected
um, what is 360ci....and 2bbl?
does this tell me my engine size?
hey, if i dont know something, ill be the first to admit it.
According to my Ford "bible", you're right on with the VIN info... As for the parts folks, I had a 68 Ranger and went through the same thing, so just give them the important stuff...F250 4WD, etc. The ranger was just a trim package with the body chrome, chrome grill, and such.
Just like they said. When you go to buy a part, wether its brakes, engine parts, shocks, anything like that, you dont need to tell them its a Ranger, it doesnt matter. Its like XL, XLT, Lariat, etc. By the way, your truck is considered a highboy. Shes a keeper !
ok guys, everyone seems to be very knowledgable about my truck, but things arent what they seem to be. I now know that I have bought someone elses problem. I went to auto zone to get some spark plugs for my "73 ford f-250" when I got home, and started changing them, i realized that the plugs i got do not fit this engine, they dont even fit the same socket I used to pull out the old plugs, because this isnt the engine that is supposed to be in this truck !! there is a label that says what size plugs to put in it, so I go back and tell her the number it says, and she says it dosent cross reference with my truck in any year. great! new problem. that aside, i took it for a test drive, when im in gear and idling or moving slowly, it likes to stall, whats causing that? im just not truck smart enough to get this thing going, im glad you guys are here.
