starter motor

i'm confused as to my next step, my 1981 F100 XLT 351C starter motor is located very close to the exhaust manifold, when cold it starts first time, but as soon as any heat travels through the manifold the starter won't work, it can be started by either shorting the solenoid or giving it a whack, but as we all know this can be inconvenient, is the solenoid stuffed? and would it be easier just to stick a new one on...

Take it apart and look for anything worn or binding on the solenoid. Also look at the brushes. They could be worn out or hanging up.

Your engine is probably a 351W not a 351C. Rebuilt starters are very reasonable, about $45.00 at most parts stores including the solenoid. I think the solenoid by itself is about $15.00.

starter solved

no it's definately a 351C it's from an Australian Ford Sedan, turns out it was volt drop, problem solved by installing starter relay, still give everything a clean though, no point doing half a job, thanks...

I once heard that if you have that problem that it works to put tin foil around your starter to resist the heat so it starts when its warm. You could try that. Its supposed to work..

all it needed was a clean and starter relay, i drove around in 38oC all day stopping and starting, it was that hot i couldn't get near the motor, she starts first time every time now and quicker... all thanks to a little black box...
