Clunking When Starting Off

My 01 Excursion seems to be clunking more when I pull away from a light. Its a 2001, v10, 4X4 and as most of you may deal with, when you hold the brakes at a light, right when you let off them you feel the slight thud/clunk. Recently I have just noticed that besides that original brake release clunk I feel a another clunk as it just starts rolling. Once moving it is still smooth as glass. No other noises, no reduction in mileage, no warning lights and no vibrations. Also, I sat in the parking lot and rocked it from drive to reverse to see if there is a clunking sound like u-joints. NO clunking sound there either...any ideas????

Slip joint.

Search for "clunk" or "slip joint" or check out the Super Duty FAQ to cure your clunking.

If you haven't been welcomed yet here it is! WELCOME!!

I would do a search and have been trying, but searching is disabled due to high traffic on the site. It has been disabled for over a week now.

Here's the how-to link I put in the Super Duty FAQ.

http://www.eurekaboy.com/f250/slipjoint.htm

It'll take you step by sep on how to grease the slip yoke/joint.

Another option is ball joints. I know my lowers are bad on both sides and I notice a slight clunk or pop as soon as I let off the brake or stop at a light. It's different from the one I used to have when I initially press the gas which was the drive shaft.

I can let my foot off the brake and roll forward with no noise. Only when I hit the gas do I get the "clunk" and then only when it intiially "engages". No other noises at anytime. I am leaning towards the split-driveshaft as the culprit. Maybe a good greasing will do the trick
