My 01 Excursion seems to be clunking more when I pull away from a light. Its a 2001, v10, 4X4 and as most of you may deal with, when you hold the brakes at a light, right when you let off them you feel the slight thud/clunk. Recently I have just noticed that besides that original brake release clunk I feel a another clunk as it just starts rolling. Once moving it is still smooth as glass. No other noises, no reduction in mileage, no warning lights and no vibrations. Also, I sat in the parking lot and rocked it from drive to reverse to see if there is a clunking sound like u-joints. NO clunking sound there either...any ideas????
Another option is ball joints. I know my lowers are bad on both sides and I notice a slight clunk or pop as soon as I let off the brake or stop at a light. It's different from the one I used to have when I initially press the gas which was the drive shaft.
I can let my foot off the brake and roll forward with no noise. Only when I hit the gas do I get the "clunk" and then only when it intiially "engages". No other noises at anytime. I am leaning towards the split-driveshaft as the culprit. Maybe a good greasing will do the trick
