Ok,this may sound crazy but whenever its in the single digits or lower my 04 screw makes a high pitched whistle as I drive down the road. This whistle comes and goes and it doesnt matter what speed im at. When I try to take it in to the dealer it stops. Im just wondering if anyone else has had a similar noise....OHHH by the way my truck is in the shop for vib/nibble..FORD has a new TSB out on it dated Jan26, They think the problem lies in the space between the hub and rim..On the older f150s there was no space causing the rim and hub to weld together,so the engineers put a bigger space between rim and hub. This was all told to me by the service manager and I did see that there was a new TSB issued. Hopefully this takes care of it!!!!
My '04 does the same thing when it's very cold out. I read somewhere here that people were saying it's the idler pulley......if I recall correctly. Mine does it just for a bit and then it quiets down. Doesn't seem to be anything serious.
It's in the 4.2L forum in the thread: Intermittent whine from engine cold ambient temp.

Mine does the same thing, only in single digits or less untill the engine warms up. Two other people I know that have 04's with 5.4's do the same. I may be wrong but is sounds like the alternator to me. I call it my cold weather alert.
Yeah but mine was still doing it after 2 hours of driving on the highway.......very strange....
Mines going in tomorrow for this problem! I can't stand it anymore! Mine never goes away no matter how hot the engine is! I'll let you know what the dealer tells me or does to my engine! I have the 4.6L though and it still does it!
I just got back from the dealer about the high pitch whistle coming from the engine when you step on the gas. I found there is a TSB for this! It's for both engines (4.6 and 5.4) You will never guess how they fixed it? PELLETS! I'm not kidding...they had a box full of small pellets that they dropped into the Radiator and told me to drive for 2 miles and the whistle should be gone! I laughed at them saying no way would this work...sure enough...it's gone!! I can't believe it myself! The whistling noise you guys are hearing is coming from the radiator...take the truck to the dealer and mention the TSB to them. The TSB says the whistle starts at 2200 RPM which is exactly when mine started to make that noise! Goodluck guys!
I have the same problem on my 04 FX4 and did some checking around at the dealership where i bought my truck. The noise i have is a high pitched whistling noise coming from under the dash more on the pass.side than drivers.Seems that Ford knows of this problem and has traced it to the air intake for the cab.The service rep.at the dealership said Ford has turned the problem/fix over to their cold weather team to solve. Also several other owners have complained about it and it seems to cover all models of F150's.The noise is only noticeable when it's -20 c or colder and has to do with the heavier density of winter air.For now i just turn up the stereo but it's supposed to warm up this coming week.
Those "pellets" are designed to lubricate the water pump. They are common in "do it yourself" leaky radiator "repairs in a bottle"... I would be nervous to put such things in my new truck. Over time, they have the potential of clogging small passages for which coolant flows..
Could you past that TSB (cause I am too lazy to look for it)

I have never heard of that TSB until today at the dealership. I have also never read about this TSB on the computer as well. Acording to there computers, it shows the TSB for the Engine Whistling at 2200 RPM...it tell the dealers to put pellets into the radiator. I know it's weird, but I can tell you that it worked for me! I wish I had something on here to show you guys, but I can't find it.
i had to same whitsle i took it to the dealer and they said it was the alt. so they replaced. i picked the truck up tonight and now it sounds like i have a mouse under the hood and it gets louder with rpm's and it runs rougher now so it's going back tommorrow. this truck is really been a pain in my a**. i have already been through the dsb once for it dropping out of gear when i come to a stop and they said it is normal and to live with it and that ford doesn't have to do anything about it. the truck is a 04scab fx4 with 10000 miles

sorry for the trouble your having! Tell them to look up the TSB for the engine whistle and perform this to your truck! It worked for me and I sure hope it works for the rest of the guys too
JRFX4, This thread is about a whistling noise coming from under the hood...not the vibe issue.
I was switching the car seats over to my minivan this a.m. so I started the truck to warm it up. I noticed this high pitched whistle you described from under the hood. It stopped after 5 minutes. ???
