Bigrigfixer,
You ever see any of those Cat 1693's anymore? I just loved the way those motors sound. You could just walk by an idleing truck and know what motor was in it.
Tried to find info on them one time, doing a search, nothing much came up.
Always thought putting a 3208 in a ford 4x4 would be ....*nifty* (chuckles to himself at nifty)
now that was motor 1693 ta at 425hp,my 72 pete had one and could that baby run,two ways you knew some one had one the idle sound and black smoke on accel. dd series 60 sound close but not that close. mine had its first o.o.c. at 727 k
3208 in a pickup that is something i also have thought of how about a 425 hp marine ver. reset to a onroad in a 350 4x4,wonder, wonder???
Did the 1693s have overhead cams? I don't know that it's produced anymore, but Cummins had a 1150ci inline 6 that put out 400-650 hp, depending on customer's specs. These went into some rigs, as well as the 12v71 Detroit.
I believe that 1693 CAT motors were rated between 325 and 425hp. Though in the 70's I also ran across some 450's and a 480.
I drove a truck that had a 1693 in it. It was supposed to be a four and a quarter by cranking up the rack and the rail on a 325. Don't think it made it to 425. A detriot 425 would out pull us in the mountains. Hated that.
The 1150 Cummins is the KTA line. They were breifly introduced in the late 70's for over the road trucks and then pulled since trannies had trouble holding the torque.
They were advertised as pulling double bottom 40 ftrs up mountains and passing trucks pulling singles. <drools>
now that was motor 1693 ta at 425hp,my 72 pete had one and could that baby run,two ways you knew some one had one the idle sound and black smoke on accel. Yes sir. You could tell when they were shifting by the black smoke too.
I use it to pull my 40' Haulmark race trailer. It will run road speed no problem, just a bit slower getting there. It don't have 15 gears for nothing .
Actually I start in 3lo, and skip shift up from there, sometimes 2lo if on a hill.
I'd like up upgrade the power a bit, buy hate to lose my 10 mpg
I think the legal limit here in Ok. is 12k per axle if I'm not mistaken... around 60-70k
Your mistaken.
12K on the steer axles, 34K on the drive axles, & 34K on the trailer axles.
80K figured just as I posted above is the normal for the 48 states. A few states say you can go higher, but your registration costs go higher for the weight.
Now, MI has a legal limit of 160K but I wouldn't take that loaded truck across the border into OH, IN, or WI. Damn, I can't even imagine what the fine would be.
1693 cat was made untill around the mid 70's if i remember right. it was built as 325. 375 and 425 hp. my pete was goosed and had a true dino reading of 475 on the ground in 12th gear, they where over head cam inlines with a 1 peice head that made the engine so strong it came close to ending cat, it was replaced by what we still know as the 3406 series. yes you could tell a shift as the smoke was like a steam train on a long grade. hills where never a problem that baby loved them, maybe a 325 would have a problem not a true 425 , detroit's 425 was a 8v92 motor and was another strong hill puller back in the mid 70's best part was you could get away with a 9 speed.
i drove for a company whose name was carretta out of paramus nj driver of the year had a kta 600 in his rig tranies where problem to much torqe but the climb up snowshoe in pa was as easie for him as me, flip the botton 13 to 12 maybe to 11 never lower.
todays motors can make these old ones shamfull

did you ever shake people up be 2 hand shifting that baby, learned how to drive a rig with one a.duplex trans what fun
Oh ya...not a real two hander yet....but I play around sometimes. It's not as easy as it looks and I think the duplex is easier to two hand then tri and quad boxes. I can fascinate most people by just knowing what handle to move when. Most of my non-truck friends just marvel .
Couple of truckin' buddies say "get rid of that tranny and put a 13 spd in it". NOT!!
It AIN'T a B model if it don't have TWO sticks!!
It doesn't bother me at all...granted sometimes it would be handy to just move one stick(like around town), but I'm making no plans!
This is the American Truck Historical Society. It has a forum that is all truck. Lots of pictures get posted and alot of useful information is passed around. I joined the ATHS organization a couple years ago and have had a blast. I've gone to a few truck shows and what a treat. A kids dream comes true

I have never met a 1693. I've heard of them though.
The biggest engine I ever worked on was a Cat D398 with a Woodward governor. That was back when I did my pre-app. Me and 3 other guys had to do a tune up on it. That sucker was so ether dependant, we'd have a guy on the ether can, another guy priming the snot out of the priming pump, a guy on the air starter, and the last one keeping an eye on the governor. But when that thing lit, it was the sweetest sounding diesel I ever heard before or since.
I also worked on a 12V149 during my pre-app. Very large, yes, but not as impressive as the Cat.
As for a 3208, I rebuilt one at work. It could fit into a pickup, but the weight is way up there. Basically, not very practical, but very simple to work on. With enough time and "uprading", you could probably get one into a big Bronco.
