I keep hearing that most intakes will not work on trucks made before a certain time in 98 mine was made on 5/98 so I was wondering 2 things one is who makes an intake that will fit on this year and two what other parts are diffrent that I need to watch out on when I'm modding the truck.
I have an early '99 (which was actually built in early '98). I have done the do it yourself air intake mod. I went to NAPA bought an open air filter (6637) and then to Menards for a 3", 22 degree PVC elbow and a 4" hose clamp. I took the air box out, slid the elbow into the intake hose and then the filter on the other end of the elbow. Don't forget the clamps. I also made a not so fancy heat shield. Total cost $47.34. I could tell a big difference in how fast the turbo spooled with the open air filter.
I have the Tymar intake on my early 99,build date of 6-98 i believe. I just called Dale and he told me what would fit and sent it right out, I didn't have to have the battery tray as I had the split tray in already. Gotta love the difference in the way the turbo spools up.
Checked with K&N and they said that it will work with exception of the heat shield bolting where the stock air box is. Those that run into this issue have to created/fabricated a strap to mount the heat shield.
Its the one that Ford makes, they claim that it filters better in dusty areas. The place that I ordered it from had the hose. I think they are a sponsor of the site and a lot less then you can go to your dealer and get it.
mmmPS you might be having problems finding a air intake due to you calling your truck a 98 model year. There were no F250 on up made for the model year 1998. You either have the old body style (OBS) which ended in 97, or you have the first model year for the Super Duty body style which was 1999. Since your truck was made in 5/98 it is considered a 'early 99'. Ford just skipped the 98 model year. As was said the AIS is Fords "Severe Duty" air intake system. I believe the part# to be 2U2Z-9K635-AA. It replaces the POS stock air box that will not seal against the filter element allowing dust past the filter seal thus "dusting" your engine. Ford of course will state it is your fault and deny a warranty claim, and cancel your 5/100 engine warranty. The AIS is the only alternative to the stock air box that will not cause warranty issues if someone was worried about the warranty. I have a Tymar open element air intake, it works great, and the cost was very good compared to others. I know AFE has one too, there are others but I can not recommend them since I have no first hand experience with them.
BTW I went to High school @ Glenbard East many years ago. I tested for the D.G. Fire Dept.

Actually I think that this is incorrect. In 1998 there was a f250 sold. It looked like a somewhat heavy duty f150. It had the "new" f150 body style that came out in the 1997 model year, however it had 8 lug rims and a heavier duty suspension. It was not tagged a "superduty"
You know Joe I think you are correct. If I remember it correctly it had 7 lug rims, but the hub caps had 8 lug nut "bulges". It still had a semi floater rear diff. I think the gvw was #7700, and it was called the F250 LD (light duty), and it did have the new F150 body. That is about all I remember.
I know that my truck is a 99. I talked to the people at Airaid and they said that their kit wouldn't work because I guess their kit goes on top of the old air box and the 98.5 are to high up so the hood dosen't close.
Back to mmm's second part... what other parts are diffrent that I need to watch out on when I'm modding the truck.I have an early 99 and really would like to know what the other diffs are also.
