This past summer I rebuilt my tailgate, mainly to make it operational until I could afford a complete new one. This one is still holding plenty strong, but I wouldn't advise doing this. The time it takes and the resources needed aren't worth it for most people. I had access to a lot of stuff so it didn't cost too much but I would tell anyone and everyone to just buy a new gate!! Fixing the old one is a waste of time and money. (IMO) Anyway, here are some pics I took in case anyone is interested.

As far as time, probably a good solid 3 and 1/2 weeks. I took my time though, you might do it in 1 or 2 weeks depending how hard you go at it. Theres a lot of hidden things you run into that aren't expected, then again that seems common to most jobs I tackle with the Bronco. As for the money... I used a friends machine shop to make the bottom pieces out of scrap metal he had lying around. I own a MIG welder so that took care of the welding. The panel was $29.00 US I believe, from St. Louis Auto Panel. (it arrived slightly bent and I was not too happy with that, they said they would look into it and then never got back to me.) It straightened itself after being tacked in several spots. The bondo, primer and paint, were probably $100 US. (130 CAD) I also put on new weatherstripping so that was expensive but doesn't really count towards the total because it is not necessary. All in all the total cost was no more than $150 US. (includes hardware, wiring etc.)
reason i asked was i had to replace my tailgate because the outerskin was spliting from the rest of it. I got a replacement from a wrecking yard for 120 and it came with everything glass, working motor and is in great shape. pics on superford page. had you checked some wrecking yards before going to all that trouble?? you did do good work though for sure.

If Canada is anything like MN then you get nothing but rusted tail gates. I would love to find a gate in good shape here. I'll be ordering tailgate shell and installing components from the stock.
I checked the junk yards, they didn't have anything. Bronco's are not very common around here, I've only counted 6 in the city so far. And the amount of salt they put on the roads here destroys most hope of finding good used body parts for cheap. (I live in New Brunswick by the way). I think I will buy an aftermarket tailgate this summer, maybe powder coat this inside and load on the paint and clearcoat. It would be nice to get all new inner components as well, but JBG wants a lot of money for things that are pretty simple. (supply and demand I guess)
Kemicalburns - that was a good find on the tailgate. Did you paint afterwards??

A brand new aftermarket shell around here will cost $230. Pretty cheap, add some good primer paint clear coat and maybe rhino-line the bottom 1/3 and inside as well. Make sure the drain holes are clear.
