Ingition system

I have a 1991 ford f-250 with the 300 inline six and i have bought the haynes manual and it describes three different ignition systems. Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between the Duraspark 2 and 3 and the TFI system. I plan on putting an MSD 6T ignition module and MSD coil on the motor.

If it is a 1991 it is TFI. TFI on a 1991 uses a module that is attached to the distributor. The Durasprak II system used a module that is mounted on the fender. They are both use a magnetic pickup coil in the distributor to tell the module when to denergize the coil causing the spark. Most of Duraspark II units still used a vacume advance to change timing. The TFI timing was controlled by the computer via the spout line going the the TFI module. TFI is a true hall effect pickup system. I have never personally seen a Duraspark III system if such an animal exists.

Wtroger, D3 was a transition system only used for 1 or 2 model years and only on certain engines. I don't think they used it on the I6. Haynes mentions it in connection with the 232 V6.

Asauppee, you'll find the TFI module on the shaft of the distributor of your
91 FI engine. The others were only used on earlier carbureted engines.
