Bad Gas Mileage

Hello,
I am new to the forum and a relatively new Ford truck owner. Just last June, I purchased a 2000 F250 7.3L Diesel. It is 4x4 with a 3in lift and 33x12.5 tires.<O

I purchased the diesel for hauling power and gas economy. Although I am quite satisfied with the power, I am disappointed with the gas mileage. I was expecting >11miles/gallon. I am currently getting 9-9.5mile/gallon on the hwy not hauling a thing. I understand that the mileage gets knock with the lift and larger tires but am I wrong for thinking I should be getting better gas economy? Does any one out there have the same problem or have any advice? Would appreciate any help, thank you.

Well your first problem is your talking about gas in a diesel, diesels use fuel. just kidding.

What else is done to the truck? how many miles?

First thing I'd say to do is change all fluids in the truck. Next do performance mods that can increase milegage...Cold air intake, better flowing exhaust, heard chips/programers can up milage (as long as the foot stays out of the throttle), and check into a fuel additive like Diesel Kleen. Possible your injectors are dirty, the diesel kleen will take care of that and should up the mileage if thats one of the problems. The fluid change should help if the trans and differentials haven't been changed lately. I bought my 96 with 238,000 miles and it was getting around 12 mpg around town when i bought it, now it has 245,000 and i'm up to average of 21 mpg. I did what i said above and put a tonneau cover on the truck and its all doing wonders.

Thank you,
I am not even at 80K miles, which really increased my concerns about my current mpg or dpg. I have been thinking about the air intake and get it programed. Thanks for the tip on the diesel kleen.

Even with all the mods to your truck, you should be getting at least 14 or 15 mpg. I would look for fuel leaks, especially around the filter housing. I usually get about 18 or 19 with my truck and my milage dropped to 12 mpg and I had a real strong smell of fuel. Ended up being a "vaccum switch" that threaded into the filter housing. Screwed it in and back to getting great milage. Maybe this will help you out.

Are you figuring out your milage, with out adding in the bigger tires? I put 35's on my 01 powerstroke, when I figure out my milage I have to add 10% to the milage, and it come out somewhere around 17 mpg.

you might want to keep your rpm 2000 and below. maintain corrrect tire pressure, and blame some on winter fuel. good luck with your new truck!

Mileage is affected by so many things it is really hard to determine what is causing it to be what many would consider low. I have an almost pure stock 99 4X4 with 109K miles in Alaska. Hardly ever get over 13 or 14 MPG. The reasons range from heavy foot, cold weather, fossil lubes in every gear box. I did notice a significant increase when I changed out the stock air fillter to the Ford AIS, added abut 1.5 MPG average. However, hauling heavy loads I never get below 11 MPG, heavy meaning 20,000 combined truck and trailer. The way I look at it, I could add a lot of mods and complicate my life even more. I have enough trouble tracking the speedometer withou having to watch a lot of other gauges to make sure I am not burning up something that iwll cost an arm and a leg. After studying all the posts here the most bang for the buck was the air filter. Mine kept me within the warranty parameters also.
