I have a 79 F150 w/351m and a 2bbl carb that I use for snow plowing. I HATE the 2bbl and want to go to a 4bbl. This may be a dumb question, but is there a different intake manifold for the 4bbl, or are they all 4bbl intakes with a 2bbl adapter?
If I need a new intake, are used ones hard to find?
There was not a factory 351M 4bbl intake, however there are aftermarket ones from Weiand & Edelbrock that work quite well.
The main problem with the switch would be the local emissions laws.
I never would've guess there wasn't a factory 4bbl intake for a v8. As for emissions, I already stripped it all off the motor. The county I live in has no emissions testing so that's not really an issue.
The reason that there was no four barrel offered on these engines is due to the era in which they were made. As far as I'm concerned, the seventies was the low point of Detroit. All their R&D money was going toward trying to comply with the "Massacre of '68" emission laws.
I'm sure that either the Weian or Edelbrock will work well. I have an Edelbrock on my '78 400 with a 600 Holley that I built from a few junk carburetors. It works quite well.
Is it possible to machine the 2bbl intake to take a 4bbl carb? Without looking at it, I'd guess the bolt pattern is the same and you'd just have to enlarge the hole.
