My fiance and I went to Southern California last summer with my sister and her husband and three boys. We took seperate cars. It was about a 14 hour trip. We went to Disneyland for the first day, Calif. Adventure on the second day, Disneyland again on the 3rd day, San Diego Zoo on the 4th day, Universal Studios on the 5th, drove to Vegas on the 6th day, and drove home on the 7th day. The best vacation of my life! We took over 400 pictures and we will never forget it. We're going on a cruise to Jamaica for our honeymoon in May, but I think the Cali. trip will be hard to beat.
My mom and dad bought one of these packace vactions to Williamsburg, VA and my sister and bortherin law, mom and dad, myself and my best friend Joe went out. 14 hour drive one way. By the ed of the week Joe and I had been kicked out of the U.S. Supreme Court, Victoria' Secret in Union station at Washington D.C., a bar and grille in Willimasburg, almost Busch gardens and another resort area. We were just ahving a good time eachtime and we didn't really cause any major trouble or get anyoe hurt we were just being 18 year olds.
The Victoria's secret thign was because we walked in with a video camera doing a live show. Beavis and Butthead do America had just coe out and we decided we could make a better movie, so that week we tried.
Of course since my 17th birthday (age 24 now) me and 3 buds take a fishing trip out to southwest MO every year at least once. Many a memory down I-44 west of St. Louis and in and around Bennett Spring State park.
Last summer a friend and I went to Maryland from Boston. We were going to take my truck, but the engine died. The jeep wasn't reliable enough, our RV was in need of some repairs so I worked on the RV for hours before the trip. I got it done and we took off a little after that. It was the first time we'd used our RV (1972 Winnebago) which has been paritially restored. It wouldn't go any higher than 55-57 because of a dented driveshaft...but we made it there in about 12 hours, 15 hours back. We got stuck in traffic in NY and overheated so we had to pull over for about 1/2 hr.
It was nice because in the RV you can get up and walk around, we have a fridge with cold drinks, could lay down and take a nap if you wanted, it's nice.
The longest road trip I have ever been on was from Vegas to Nogalas. It was 9 hours or so. In a couple of weeks i am getting ready to go to Canton Ohio with a friend, it should be a good 32 hours of straight driving!
Well, my longest and best road trip was from San Francisco to Fairbanks, Alaska in 1983. Took the 81 F150 and a month off of work and made Alaska in 4 days. I drove all over Alaska and did a lot of camping.. Camped out at Wonder Lake Campground in Denali Park; saw Mount Mc Kinley up close, about 20 miles from the base. Now that is an awesom mountain. Visited a lot of cities and towns all through Alaska. I heard horror stories about the Al Can Highway. Most were true. Back then it had about 1200 miles of hard packed gravel road; one way. Talk about pot holes. I hit one section of road that had potholes for about 80-100 miles. Never had one flat but my steering and suspension felt like it had 100,000 miles on it. Brutal. Lost a windshield. No biggie. Saw the northern lights (aurora borealis). That was cool to. Took the ferry back from to Haines, Alaska to Prince Rupert, Canada and still put on 10,000+ miles on this trip. Will I do this again? You bet your rear axle I would and will. Oh yea, went by myself, but met a buddy up there. I still think about that trip. Can you blame me?
My buddy got stationed in Maine after Navy boot camp. Went with him when he took his Blazer up there. Drove from St. Louis to Maine we stopped in Boston for a day and N.Y. Then rode home with his parent's who had been following us.
My first road trip still stands out in my memories after all these years. I was 15 and had my learner's permit, my folks and I drove from Tahoe City to Seattle, stopped on the way to see Crater Lake, flew from Seattle to Fairbanks AK. to visit my sister for 2 weeks, flew back to Seattle and stayed with my cousin in Bremerton, then drove down the Oregon coast to Gold Beach where we stayed with friends, then to Eureka, Ca. to see another friend, and then home to Tahoe City. I drove the entire way, wouldn't let my folks get near the wheel!
A little less than a year later, the 3 of us drove a Le Car all through Europe for a month, hitting France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Luxembourg, and Belgium. Turned the car in at Calias, France and took the hovercraft across the channel, didn't try to drive in England. I drove most of the trip through Europe, though. -TD
Most of my "road trips" have been with my wife. Most recently was from here, through Kelowna, Banff, Edmonton, and into Saskatchewan where her family is from. Then back through Edmonton to Jasper, then Kamloops, and finally home, in a week. The rest of them are usually 3 or 8 hour commutes to Kamloops or Prince George.
Of any family vacations I went on, the one that sticks out the most was when the 5 of us, plus my aunt and uncle went down to Reno. My aunt and uncle picked up their motorhome from a repair shop, and we carried on to Disneyland. I was really into anything concerned with flying back then, so I had my dad drive to Edwards AFB. I wanted to see where Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier. Not much to see other than a chain link fence, and lots of desert. Then, we drove up to San Francisco for a couple days, before heading home. I think I was about 11 or 12 at the time.
What would you guys/gals suggest for a good road trip for an 18 year old? I live in southern MN, and would go in the summer, like june/july. I really want to do somthing fun, it would be me and probalby another vehicle, total people would probalby be about 5. It doesnt have to be illegal to be fun either, i mean, i dont have to pitch up a tent and get drunk to have fun. I just cant think of anything that sticks out in my mind to be amazingly fun for the average 18 year old and 4 of his friends to do. Fishing/camping would be cool. Or just going loading up the truck, filling it with gas, and start driving in a direction would be equally cool.
On edit: I think my first road trip will be me and another motorhead going to the FTE get together this summer, i really really am going crazy thinking about it allready, i wonder how plans for that are coming along?
I am 18, and I think for Spring Break I'm going to take a road trip to Area 51, about 100 miles outside of Las Vegas. No I'm not expecting to see any aliens or anything, but I have been intrigued by that place since I was little. Plus there are several stops along the way I want to make, such as my grandfather's military base in Pyote, TX. I believe its about a two day drive from central Texas, and I'll probably just go alone. It would be nice to have about a week away from everything - work, school, crazy people... I'm looking forward to it.
Spurr of the moment I decided to talk my friend into taking a road trip to Illinois a couple of years ago, an hour later we were on the road. Met up with some lady friends over there and after deciding we'd only stay for the weekend, six days later we were on the road back to Ohio. What a great trip.
