Hi folks, I hope you guys can help me with a question. Does anyone know what kind of axles were used in ambulance packages? The one in question is an E-350 but i cant tell if its a late 70's or an early 80"s but it doea have a solid front axle(4X4). I cant get close to it until the day of the auction but by then I wont be able to jump on here an ask for help. My main interest in it is parts for my 78 F-250 for offroad use, so does anyone know anything about the drivetrain of an E-350 anbulance I would realy appreciate any help. If it helps it is a van type box but the body extends way past the rear axle, much farther than a trucks. Thanks, Dave
That is probably some kind of 4x4 conversion done by the body upfitter after the cab and chassis were made but before the chassis became an ambulance. Quigley is one company that has been converting Ford E-series vans to 4wd for a long time. They have a website which you might want to check out. I forget the URL though. I'm sure a Google search would bring it up though.
My guess is the front axle would be a Dana 60 and the rear a Dana 70. That axle combination is what most 1-ton 4x4's used in the 'seventies and early 'eighties.
Go here: www.precisiongear.com and look in the ring and pinion section, under Dana, and you can see pics of different Dana axles. Ford, GM and other axles can be seen there as well.
