I have a 1994 dodge caravan. I hear a click, click on the left front end when i do a right hand turn on the road. Its only done it once a week, three times now. I heard a click, click once to on the right side to while doing a left turn. I just had the struts replaced and a front end alignment. Van runs straight, no tire wear. I'm think front wheel bearings what do you think.Van has 150,000 miles and a new transmission. Front brake shoes look ok to.
Thanks,
Mike
Thanks guys! I'll have the garage do it, its to cold out. Is checking CV joints part of doing a front end alignment? I was wondering if they missed it when doing the front end alignment last month. How do you check the CV joints when the van is on the lift? Can I get them to click, click again while the wheel are up?
Guys should I change my wheel bearings also with them having 150,000 miles?
Thanks,
Mike
The joints, as a rule, only click with a load on them and yes...I would replace the bearings also. It's better to be safe than sorry with that many miles on the drive train.
There is a slight chance it could be the hub caps also (if it has them) and you can pull them off and then drive it to tell. I would tend to agree that it is probably the cv joints and they wouldn't necessarily been notice during an alignment unless the boots were torn and greasy. You can get parts to rebuild them but it is quicker and much cheaper to just get short shafts (pre-assembled rebuilt) and put them in.
toss it onto the lift and with it in park try to spin the tire back and forth and listen, then turn the wheels all the way and do it again. you will need to disconnect the lower control arm, tie rod, sway bar, etc. and be prepared to really grunt on that axlenut! good luck!
Cv boot was torn so I had it replaced. I can still here a noise when turning right a low sound thump, thump. I wounder if its brakes or the springs??? Pads are ok for now shocks are new. I did noticed that there a plastic boot that slides up and down on the strut maybe that the noise. I don't remember the old struts had this black plastic cover with ridges over the struts, the part doesn't look new though. The neighbor has a van like mine ill check her van. Any thoughts on what the noise is? Front end was check to.
it doesn't take much driving to ruin a joint that has a split boot. although if the sound isn't major you might still have a few more miles on it. my neighbors geo went for hundereds of mile with that joint clicking away!
