Drove my 1984 f-150,302 2 barrel, about 60 kms today and when I shut her off it back fired. What could cause this problem. Any help would be appreciated. This is not the first time this happened.
Does it have an unusually smelly exhaust? That could be from it running a little rich, maybe from a power valve in the carb with a hole in it. Unburned fuel in the exhaust from a rich condition could cause a backfire.
On your motorcraft type 2bbls, it's under the front of the carb, behind a plate with four screws. On the front of the carb there is a plate with four screws and a lever. This is the accelerator pump. The power valve plate looks just like this, only no lever and you have to take the carb off to get to it. If when you take the plate off, if it's wet with gas, it's a sure sign the valve has been leaking, since under the cover should only be vacuum. The fuel should be only on the other side of the valve up in the fuel bowel.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-May-02 AT 04:59 PM (EST)]where is the power valve located on the 351ho 4bbl? i have a sudden problem with my engine running very rich and i suspect its the power valve. How hard are they to replace?
thanks
I am assuming your HO has the Holley type carb. This one is up inside the carb. But I believe you can get to it without having to take the carb off if you don't want to.
Put a towel on the intake manifold under the front of the carb, and take one of the lower four bolts loose on front of the carb. Gas should pour out till the fuel bowel is drained. Take the rest of the bolts out and pry the front of the carb off. It should be a large piece (fuel bowel), and a smaller piece (metering block) that comes off. The power valve is screwed into the back of the metering block. But the fun has begun, since now you have to scrape all the old gaskets off. I know advance in my area carries the gaskets and power valve you need seperately without having to buy a whole kit. When you put it back together, watch out for the o-ring on the fuel tube on the side of the carb. Put a little oil on it before you put it back in, and it would be nice if you could buy a new o-ring too.
