How were the old plugs? Dirty? Just curious, if they were clean, well, sounds like something else is flakey...

Sounds like you need to rebuild the carb. It sounds like to me as your idle circuit is all gummed up. Thats why it runs off the gas you dump into the carb. Also, when you pump it, thats the main circuit only, so thats working, but not the idle circuit. Guarantee you thats the problem, been there, done that. hope this helps.

not disagreeing with you alcan60283,but if there were something wrong with the idle circuit,wouldn't it not idle after it started and ran? the idle was as smooth as it ever has been when I drove it every day 6 months ago

good to see its running now, spark plugs are tempermental little things, sometimes they last for years, sometimes they only last a few days...ive had plugs that were bad right outta the box, looked fine but no sparky....all it takes is a small amount of water or condensation to get into the cylinders to mess up a plug, hope this is the answer and things stay cleared up for ya.....
