Hey guys,
Got a weird problem. I was out last night cruizin the town, about 1am'ish, I realize my cluster lights are barely lit up. Then i see my headlights are pretty dim and my blinkers do not work at all.
I arrive to my parking space and shut er off and try to fire up again and I get nothing. Fine I say, I go to bed.
I just went out to put the charger on it and figured, ah Ill see if it fires up. Sure enough it whirled over and fired.
I dont get it??
It hasnt even been cold the last 2 days, above freezing.
THanks for any thoughts/ideas.
You need to see if it is charging. Check the voltage at the battery with the truck off. Then check it with the truck running. It should be higher when it's running. Or you can take it to a parts store that has a system checker.
If the battery is dead, and you let it rest, it will recover by itself a little bit. This could be why it started the next morning.
Hmm Okay Ill check it out, need to find me a tester.
I find it really strange that it got enough juice in it just over a few hours to fire it up. Tanks alot of juice to fire that hog up. First time its ever happend.
The battery is also a peice of junk, batteries been right dead a few times.
It happend to me again today. This time i didnt make it back home, she died on my in the middle of the road. 20 mins later a young fella came by and asked me if i needed help. He jumped me and it fired up. (He said he saw the old ford with the hood up so he had to stop. Turns out hes got a 77' 3/4 12inch lift, with a 429sj..not ont he road tho)
Anyway, evrything seemed fine, i drove a buddy to get our crew truck from the shop and I got one of em to bring a volt meter out, it was reading 13.6 when it was running. Never checked with the truck off.
I drove it home and evrything was fine. I checked battery cables, solenoid cables to starter, ground cable to block. All seem fine.
Im thinking it must be the alt. cutting in and out???
I had the same problem going on in my comet. The alternator was charging enough to start and drive the car during the day but at night with the lights on they would start fading out and the car would die. The alternator was working, just not enough, I put a new one on and that took care of it.
If it's not charging ALL that it should, it will leave you stranded. When my neighbor tested mine, the old one was only charging 1 volt less according to his meter.
